@pieist You sure it's not something else on your end? I've used Thunderbird for a decade now and never had any of those problems. I use it now to manage dozens of accounts and it can check all of them in seconds.

Gun violence

@MattFerrel @Haste Right, and, as I understand it, there's little-to-no evidence of the effectiveness of active-shooter drills to actually prepare kids rather than just filling them with a never-ending sense of impending dread. That goes to my point above about panic expressed by authority figures.

Glad to hear police stopped that kid you mentioned in time. I hope whoever he got the gun from (most likely a parent) is arrested as well.

@otownKim It came out in 2019, so I think it was more of a reflection than a prediction of reality.

Man, I love the show Veep, but that last season is almost unwatchably dark.

"I'm going to use Yelp's projects feature so I can schedule appointments without having to actually call these people!"

Every single respondent: "What's your phone number so I can call you?"

So, uh, are they gonna have to create a new scale for hurricanes in the next day or two?

The grand jury also recommended indicting two former US senators for #Georgia: David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler and current US Senator Lindsey Graham of #SouthCarolina.

@GayDeceiver None of the above? For whatever reason, I always pronounced it "See-kull", without the "w" sound in "sequel".

It's disturbing how much insurance companies resemble old-timey mobsters:

"Oh, so you wanna make a claim, do ya'? Ya' know what happens to wise guys who make claims don'tcha? How about instead you just sit the fuck down and pay us your 'premium'."

Have you ever wanted the experience of being confused and just asking "Why"? Here's a way you can get that experience right here, right now!

Simply, if you're on Windows, press:

Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Win+L

@w7voa ...it doesn't actually say anything, though. It's just political word salad.

Gun violence

@Haste Those are totally valid concerns. Fwiw, my intent was not to trivialize the tragedies themselves, but rather to take issue with the breathless media coverage that creates a sense of dread that might otherwise not be so pervasive.

Although, I did feel somewhat compelled to run the numbers and the percentage of Japan's 1945 population killed by atomic bombs (0.3%) was 3000x the percentage of K-12 kids who died in school shootings out of the total US student enrollment in 2022 (0.0001%).

Gun violence

@Haste Right, and while we can agree that's abhorrent, it's important to put it into context. There are, by one count at least, about 120,000 schools serving k-12 students in the United States. So, 23 would mean that 0.02% of schools experienced a shooting in the past year.

Now, obviously, any school shootings are too many school shootings, but it's worth understanding that the vast, vast majority of students' exposure to school shootings comes indirectly through the panic expressed by media and authority figures, not from the shootings themselves.

@brody God, that "reason" was so very incredibly dumb.

I still maintain that the series ended with MGS4.

@ilneill I don't need a compiler for that; I have an IDE. I can right click, select "format" and all of it is nice and pretty and readable.

@ilneill Me too, of course. But that's the point. White space should be for humans, not compilers!

I would like a lot more if it just let me confine my code in braces like any sane language. White space should not be functional!
