@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo That's not an unreasonable position to be in.

As for trying, the Crusaders were trying to make the world a better place by spreading the word of Christ; how well did that work out?

Trying is only half the battle. *How* you try is equally as important, and that's where the issues with Sanders arise.

@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo Have you *seen* how humans behave?

No, I think a prerequisite to survival is, y'know, "wanting to survive" and it seems like a majority of our species is ambivalent to that at best.

@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven Our odds are always going down, on a long enough timescale. That's the nature of entropy. 😛

@freemo Certainly not a realistic one. It seems more or less inevitable that we're getting a rematch.

Once again, politics isn't about the best choice, but rather about the least-worst choice.

This is an illustrative story:

TV Misogynists chat on TV about how some female journalist is so awful they wouldn't even wanna screw her.

Which at least causes a bit of a fuss. Enough so that another TV show invites on a lefty journalist woman to debate some right wing dude on whether there's really a patriarchy and if misogyny exists.

The dude lets it slip that they're paying him to do so, which takes a few seconds to sink in. You can see the outrage on her face as it dawns on her that he's getting paid and she isn't.

To talk about whether there's really any culture of misogyny.

Have snorkel kits become a standard option on overcompensator trucks now?

I remember when a snorkel kit was something the user had to install themselves. It meant they knew a bit about mechanics and drove through some real terrain.

Now I see them on shiny waxed-up gigantotrucks driving through the city, where they only serve to further block the driver's vision.

@freemo No, you couldn't. The reason is that, above a certain height, the centrifugal force will overcome the force of gravity. The key to a space elevator is to build it in such a way that the forces at each end balance the other (kind of like building an arch).

So, the base isn't the problem... The middle is. We don't have strong enough materials that can hold the end that's being pulled away from the planet to the end that's being pulled towards the planet together.

@freemo In my case, it usually means that I've gone beyond the depth of knowledge I have readily available, but I still think the other person is wrong, but I feel too lazy or exhausted to do a couple hours of research to argue with someone on social media.

contains Tweet

@fakertarians There are very few quote tweets that so thoroughly prove the point they're trying to reject.

Huh. Looks like, when you place an online order from WingStop, they use a *Chinese* payment processor. For an American company taking American dollars.

That's not suspicious at all.

@Loukas A little of both. If someone I don't know tells me they have cancer, I don't really know how to react to that other than very basic sympathy. And that's what the hollow offer has become in modern language... an expression of sympathy.

@Loukas Me neither, but what else do you say? "Good luck with that"? We can't provide meaningful help to people we don't really know.

@Loukas Isn't that kind of the point of the phrase, though? For true friends, we already know what they need and we just help. For the neighbor we've seen twice in the last year, we say "Let me know if there's anything I can do to help." knowing that it's largely a hollow offer.

@brad_frost I don't know Notion, but the standard pattern for a relational database would be to add a new table to describe this relationship, with just those three keys, that could then be referenced in relation to any of the three main tables.

I had no idea.
WTF?

#ClivenBundy, the infamous rancher who should be in prison (along with his son) is STILL running cattle “with seeming impunity” on protected federal land (a national monument).

#BLM attempted to corral the cattle in 2014 and was outnumbered by armed vigilantes, foreshadowing January 6th.

In 2014, he owed an estimated $1,100,000 in fees and fines.

@brody Yeah, I'm pretty sure the wordbuilder for the Source SDK used to make Half-Life 2 had that functionality. I remember reading about devs who would make buildings in the editor, and then export them and partially destroy them into rubble in a model editor for City 17 environments.

@saren @theaardvark @robb The drier sheets and kleenexes don't need to be everywhere, but for those of us with pets & allergies, they are still far more necessary than an iron or a top sheet.

My mum would spend hours ironing clothes when I was a kid. I dont think I’ve ever seen an ironing board at any of my friends houses. A whole generation just said “fuck ironing” and we did. Good work everyone.
