@senficon Maybe not you specifically, but it does seem like a lot of modern journalism is just reporting on articles from other journalists in other outlets. LLMs could do that just fine.

@interfluidity Right, but the state exercised that power because those networks were utilizing a limited spectrum that was owned and doled out by the state, not because they had a wide reach.

A democratic platform must be viewpoint-neutral in its moderation, almost by definition. And the federal government already has its hands tied when it comes to viewpoint discrimination, hence my suggestion.

@interfluidity If people really want a neutral platform, they should lobby the government to start one. And then they can wallow in the hell they hath wrought.

@freemo As I understand it, that's not correct. The bill in the senate only had about half the support of the GOP, not the full support, and that was because the majority worked with the minority to find a compromise, not because the GOP members randomly chose to be magnanimous.

In the House, however, we have jackass McCarthy running things, and he doesn't even seem to know what the word "compromise" means. So of course Dems aren't going to vote for a bill when they've had no input into its creation. That's not their fault; that's them doing their jobs.

@georgetakei Or they could just reach across the aisle for compromise, robbing those individuals of their power.

But that's just silly, right?

@nsarwark No, but I do think that the saw blades and barbed wire undermine the premise that it's the greatest country in the world in the first place.

@freemo The Dem-majority Senate managed to pass a major bipartisan bill.

So, yes, in comparison at least, the failure of the GOP-majority House to find a workable compromise falls on its leadership.

This is genuinely one of the nicest pieces of public art in Sydney - using the 80-year-old wooden treads from the former escalators to create a stunning statement in Wynyard Station, a busy transport interchange.

I hate the attitude that working very hard is some kind of moral obligation, it just isn't. People on salary that get asked to work overtime are being stolen from, period. It's interesting how often jobs will ask you to prove that you're a good worker, but never have to prove that they are good employers. Just like any good relationship, you should never be giving more than you're getting back.

@timo21 @marcelias Agreed, and that's why they need the leeway. Laws are written in a vacuum. If they're applied to the letter, without consideration for circumstance, they'll almost always end up being used unjustly.

Even refusing to enforce pot laws can save lives (by not sending an otherwise upstanding citizen to con college).

And elections are how we judge cops for the use of that leeway.

@timo21 @marcelias And if the community doesn't like that, they're free to elect a new sheriff next cycle.

@timo21 @marcelias Stanislav Petrov also put his own views above the very important rules dictated by his community. But I think it's safe to say we're all better off for it.

Police shouldn't be able to invent new laws to enforce, but I certainly don't mind them having the prerogative to choose not to enforce an unjust law.

@timo21 @marcelias In my city, the Sheriff chose to stop booking people for marijuana before the city council.

Do you believe he was in the wrong?

A substantial number of insect biologists study social parasites. These are organisms that infiltrate the colonies of social insects, like ants or wasps, and divert resources to themselves without contributing to the functioning of the colony.

I gotta say, the super-wealthy who offshore money and purchase judges and politicians fit nearly every techincal definition of social parasitism.

@marcelias Is this really so different from sanctuary cities or localities that have chosen not to enforce marijuana possession laws?

@freemo Right, I don't think ignorance of the law would help you if you acted in bad faith. But I think it might if you acted in good faith, like a little bonus.

@freemo Well, but they're connected. If you're ignorant of the law, then you're not inherently intending to break it.
