@robinshipton @skrishna How so? Especially given the overlap between the two subjects?

For example, posting about police abuse against POC. Is that minority experience that shouldn't get the CW or political and should get the CW?

If you've noticed your Home timeline here is pretty quiet it's because at the other place you were constantly hit with 'here's a tweet someone you follow has Liked', or 'here's another from someone you don't follow but someone you follow follows them!', or just general spam. So your timeline was constantly full of things you really didn't want to see and hardly any content you actually cared about.

In this place you only see posts from those you follow, so remember to boost the good stuff!

@zep I'm pretty confident its the lines on the inside and outside. With strongly contrasting colors and the spin rate, our brains stop interpreting them as separate lines, and instead interpret them as motion blurs from the larger color blocks, leading to the perceived effect.

Two tests to confirm this theory:
1) Remove the lines. Does the effect go away?
2) Reverse the orientation of the lines. Does it reverse the perceived effect?

@mjbarton Considering how Twitter already masks most links into its "t.co" shortener, extremely easy.

As I understand it, there are *already* high profile examples, including a verified account pretending to be Twitter itself that was pushing a crypto scam.

Uk/Ru War

Very happy to hear about the liberation of Kherson. Congrats to the Ukrainian army. It's always good to read about freedom prevailing.

@skrishna I agree with your point, but doesn't that same "don't look away" logic work for many political posts, too?

@skanman I feel like there's something deeply problematic about blaming his douchebaggery on autism.

@SusantaC Unfortunately, the only answer is that it's a skill/muscle like any other.

Social media trained our brains for quick dopamine hits.

If you want to retrain for long-form reading, the only way I know of: practice. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

@RayPaseur @Senatorshoshana You can in the newest version, but not all servers are up to that version yet.

@Senatorshoshana Keep in mind these are privately-run servers. GIFs take a lot of space en masse, which is expensive.

Courtesy rules here are to either link to a GIF instead of uploading or to try to use the lower-footprint emojis instead.

Wait, how did I not know before that Elon has kids and named them like robots?

That's so extremely on-brand for his inhuman persona.

Having been here since 2016, I can tell you there is definitely no such thing as a consensus on usage of content warnings on the fediverse. It's a decentralized network that doesn't belong to any one party, so by definition there is no single culture on it. Different corners have different expectations and customs.

@annmlipton I wasn't aware that there was something worse than corporate buzzword speak, but, well, I guess you learn something new every day.

@VidaliaOnion Try a service like TweetDelete. It allows you to nuke the *content* of your account. Then you can leave it up as an empty account with a redirect to your new Mastodon address. Just be sure to delete DMs too. I definitely didn't want those in Elon's hands.

@evilattorney @briannawu The latter is definitely a concern, but I think the bigger issue leading to hackability is just the mass exodus of institutional knowledge.

I wrote a little thing about FTC consent decrees, and Twitter, and how all the people who were facing potential criminal charges for not complying with the FTC consent decree quit Twitter last night... and why Elon's not caring about the FTC doesn't much matter if the FTC cares about him... (which it likely does) techdirt.com/2022/11/10/does-t

I really have to say, of all the mass exodus onto this server we had over the years, this is one of the best. the quality and kindness of our new users are absolution exceptional. I appreciate all of you and welcome to the sane part of the internet!

That's actually a great system. Just ask Boeing.

RT @CaseyNewton@twitter.com

According to messages shared in Twitter Slack, Twitter’s CISO, chief privacy office, and chief compliance officer all resigned last night.

An employee says it will be up to engineers to “self-certify compliance with FTC requirements and other laws.”

@lucifargundam I was referring to a comments section on a website, not on the fediverse.
