@Pat I'm not saying that command line installers shouldn't exist.

Just that they shouldn't be the only option.

Folks. It's 2023. If you're still releasing installers without GUIs, quit your job now.

Nobody should have to go to shell prompts to install shit anymore.

@darryl Not necessarily. For most of the history of the internet, the path of least resistance for email was through your ISP, which was why all our grandmas had addresses ending with centurylink or sbcglobal. And that was totally decentralized. And they got it.

Really, the only difference between email and mastodon, at this point, is the adoption rate.

@darryl Then my answer to your previous question would be "mastodon.social".

Both answers would be equally as correct.

@darryl If I asked you the question "What page do I go on to get on email?", how would you answer that?

@darryl You really think your aunt can't tell if she's using Gmail or Yahoo?

I don't know which fork of the masto server I'm on either. I only know the address and branding of the provider... which the vast majority of email users know too.

Apparently he just got a stick stuck in his upper palate. I didn't see it last night, so he had to sleep with it, but I was able to extract it this morning and he seems much happier now.

@drewharwell @caseynewton That last part is what's so confounding to me.

The government is the forum to punish people for breaking the law, not big tech.

@darryl ...which is exactly what they get.

Nobody has to log into different websites to access their email, yet email is essentially a federated service.

The people who find email understandable and Mastodon baffling simply don't want to understand it.

@drewharwell @donieosullivan Held them to account for what?

They didn't break any laws.
And they're not a law enforcement organization that's obligated to act on threats to our capitol.

If anything, they were more aware and prepared for J6 than our own federal law enforcement.

But we still have to pass the buck to someone, huh?

Based on his current behaviour, I think my dog tried to eat a fire ant hill.

@brad_frost Right, because marketing (or lack thereof) is the majority reason why anything succeeds or fails in the modern world.

@jaykuo The closing bit contains some dangerous rhetoric...

The marketplace of ideas is no more an "oligopoly" than it was 100 years ago when newspapers were owned by a few rich guys. If anything, social media has democratized the marketplace of ideas to an historic extent.
Of course individuals make decisions. The point of the marketplace of ideas is that we have the choice to go along with their decisions, criticize them, or boycott them. If enough people choose to boycott them, guess what? They won't be rich oligarchs much longer. They understand this and *regularly* bend to the whims of the masses for that very reason.

That's the free marketplace of ideas in action.

It may not always work the way you want, but in the long run, it's much better than creating governmental speech regulations that will inevitably be abused by the same election-denying Republicans you're concerned with in the first place.

@jaykuo "This highlights the problem of giving companies full free speech rights as if they were people: When they act in ways we don’t like, we have no legal leg to stand on."

That's not a bug, it's a feature. For anyone who doesn't like the way companies exercise their rights, they can choose not to patronize them. The idea that this must be solved by government *is* the problem.

@raynetoday We can do a lot, yes, but the core design of the system prevents two accounts from occupying the same handle. No coding magic gets around that.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do learn from history are doomed to watch it repeated by those who didn’t.
