@timbray Next time I get pulled over: "Are you an AI? You have to tell me by law if you're an AI."

Starting my day with a crab & cheese omelet with applewood-smoked habanero sauce and thanking myself that the modern world is capable of producing such things.

@dsilverman Shit, all this time, I've been a "de-influencer"? I thought I was just bitching and moaning.

@dantemercurio Say what you will, but if that car goes off a cliff, it's not exploding until the fifth or sixth bounce.

@MaxAmmons Best I can tell, my liquid cooler has been on a slow decline and it just finally gave out while I was playing a CPU-intensive game and I didn't notice in time.

So, it would seem I managed to melt my expensive CPU this evening...

@xankarn And incitement has an incredibly high and difficult standard to meet, for good reason.

Of course there are first amendment exceptions; but that's not a good argument for why your proposed exception is a good one.

More importantly, though, talk to me when your anti-nazi-homeschooling law takes effect and the first person charged under it is a black woman for teaching CRM.
If you open the door to the government punishing speech you find frightening, then you open the same door for your opponents.

@xankarn Yes, you did. You specifically talked about "what permissible restrictions the law should entertain".

@xankarn Allowing the government to punish people for the content of their speech is absolutely "ceding" free speech principles in our law.

@xankarn Freedom of speech *is* upholding democracy's core values.

Ceding free speech to stop people from saying things you don't like is an abandonment of democracy itself.

It truly is amazing how Elon can know so little about the site he massively overspent to buy. The scammers aren't using the official API, dude.

@mmasnick Also, there is absolutely a verification process. Before gaining access, you have to essentially submit an application with an essay explaining to Twitter why you want access before they'd consider granting you an account (that they can presumably easily track). The sign up process was arduous enough to put me off signing up to make a joke bot.

Or, at least, all that was required before Musk took over.

@joelmartinez While that is true, making it harder to profit from art also suppresses art.

In a society where we have to profit to survive, we'll be creating much less art after working 40 hours in an artless career than we would in a society that allows us to live off our art.

@torresjrjr Wait a minute... on number 5: How could a month ever not start and end in the same year?

Week, sure. But months shouldn't overlap years.

Let's say the Chinese government was using TikTok to surveil Americans.

If you ban Tik Tok, the Chinese gov can just legally purchase the same info from data brokers, because the US has almost no privacy laws.

Don't ban TikTok, pass a damn privacy law nytimes.com/2023/02/01/opinion

@mmasnick If you know the approximate time of night when it happens, try checking the Windows Event Log to see if there's a corresponding event at that time. Might be something as simple as your computer going back to a high-power state temporarily to check for updates.

Can we have a decade where we get 1960s hairstyles, 1920s formalwear, and 1980s leisurewear?

Please and thank you.

@joecarlwhite Still, it's impressive how closely so many of them hew to the Kremlin lines.
You'd think the contrarians would at least come up with their own reasoning instead of directly cribbing it from Putin himself.
