@mmlvx @72mz @Teri_Kanefield Sure, but a lot of it isn't too. Both confirmation bias and tribalism bias have strong roots in our survival instincts.

So does overeating to the point of obesity, if you want a more general indicator of how well we're able to overcome our more primitive instincts.

@mmlvx @72mz @Teri_Kanefield I disagree. No matter how enlightened we think we are, fundamentally, we are animals with hard-wired instincts.

@mral @Teri_Kanefield It does. It just doesn't get publicized. The many inclusive, supportive communities that sprang up in social media are a lifeline for lots of people, especially the neurodivergent.

@mmlvx @72mz @Teri_Kanefield It's not a cultural shift you'd need, but rather a shift in human nature, which is exceedingly unlikely.

@Teri_Kanefield I don't know about that framing... Social media has certainly made *information* in general easier to spread. That some portion of that would be misinformation is inevitable, but I wonder if the ratio on social media is really that different than the pre-internet era of old wives tales...

So many conservative complaints boil down to "the people we oppress are treated like heroes, but we, the people who oppress them, are never treated like heroes, wah."

I'll start respecting police the day that police start respecting the law.

"For people who live near precincts, their most frequent interaction with the police will be observing them breaking the law, forcing them to walk ...

@shoq @mmasnick The line has always been well-defined. It's sycophantism. Either you're a sycophant or you're an enemy.

@chancerydaily What does this mean for the jurisdiction of pending litigation against Twitter?

@gwensnyder So come to a server that supports quote tooting, like the one I'm on. Vote with your feet.

@Vincarsi @aram So, arguably, in other words, they choose to reject the power that would otherwise corrupt them.

@muzikant But also, the NRA does things to really lock in its stranglehold on the culture.

For example, it's almost impossible to get any regular property insurance company to insure a gun range.

But the NRA will do it, and for a reasonable price even... if every member of the range is a member of the NRA and pays their dues.

@muzikant Oh, there are many competing organizations. A couple dozen probably. Some more liberal, others even more extreme than the NRA. None have really gotten enough traction yet, though (probably because they don't have the financial backing of the gun industry like the NRA does).

@muzikant You may also be surprised how many of us gun owners are registered democrats who hate the NRA.

@muzikant Yes, and many gun owners in America, myself included, agree with you on that. Open-carry is a divisive topic, even among gun owners.

@muzikant Who do you think ordered the design of the AR-15 in the first place?

Or the next-gen armor-penetrating rifle that's currently in development to replace it?
