@LouisIngenthron

I was just about to say something similar... the other thing that prevents open communication is if you go to a thread and there is so much hateful spam that doesnt even attempt to be constructive or have a conversation that the thread becomes tedious to follow or interact on at all.... so people who want a conversation just avoid it and the problem gets worse.

The only way to have healthy open communication is if you have filtering on some level... obviously filtering can be abused too so you have to address both sides for the viewer.... this I like louis's solution, one that empowers everyone to see what they want.

I mean hell i shouldnt be **forced** to see something just because I need to have open communication... if i dont want open communication, as idiotic as that is, that is my right.. I should be able to see what i want to see, and filter what i dont.

@sim

@sim @freemo If you think nazi trolling is "open communication" then you and I have very different definitions of that term.

@sim @freemo It's a tool. You can use it to close off your world if you want, or you can use it to keep your other followers from having to view nazi trolling.

@freemo @sim We're talking about different things. You're referring to the new option we discussed earlier to unhide hidden replies. In my above post, I was referring to the option to enable replies *in the Home feed*, from the hamburger menu next to Home. Without that, no replies are shown in Home, so hidden ones wouldn't either.

@khird That was my guess too!

And it's wrong. Because they say that the pressure differential is *caused* by heat exchange, so that's the right answer.

But it's caused by a dozen other things too, so screw the guy who wrote that question.

@sim @freemo We're not talking about the timeline, though, we're talking about a thread.

Someone hiding replies from their thread presumably wouldn't prevent the post from appearing in your timeline if you followed the hidden replier and have replies turned on in your home feed.

I think the feature makes sense because most users treat threads they start as their own property. People can come in and join the conversation if they want, but the host should have the right to kick them out of the thread if they disrupt the party. The person kicked out is then free to start their own competing thread.

@khird Yep. I literally have to memorize the rules for an airplane towing an unpowered glider through the air, which is bad enough.

But then I get questions like "Weather is the result of: (a) pressure differential, (b) movement of air, or (c) heat exchange" and as a student of physics my answer is "ALL DAMN THREE."

The requires a 70% to pass licensing tests.

This appears to be, in large part, because the tests are absolute garbage. They are ambiguously-worded, they have questions about ratings you're not even trying to get, and the charts they provide have larger margins of error than the gap between answers.

If this test weren't so incompetently assembled, they could require 90% to pass and have more qualified pilots as a result.

@freemo Yeah, that seems reasonable. Basically the exact same as content warnings.

@freemo This is implemented in Twitter and it's actually a really nice feature. You could "hide" replies to your own posts. It would then have a little notification to readers saying "some replies have been hidden by the thread poster" and you could click in to see those hidden posts.

It provided what the OP you're quoting wants with reasonable balance for others. And, when you looked at which posts someone chose to hide, it was very revealing about who they are.

I wouldn't mind this feature making its way to Mastodon at all.

I wonder how many other game developers are creating projects called "AssetDownloader"

@LumenDatabase @josephcox @jasonkoebler @samleecole @mikarv Meanwhile, the rate at which new entries are coming in is staggering. It was 300,000 entries when I first looked an hour ago, now it's 500,000.

@gpowerf It goes beyond the graphics in Starfield, though. For example, they made crushed styrofoam cups and disposable coffee lids into things that you could pick up and clutter your inventory with. Why?!?

@LALegault @JuliusGoat @soc_i_ety Like any ideal, there are the true believers and then there are the grifters giving the true believers a bad name.

@FlippingBinary ...shared on social media by a national news reporter.

You really did.

@FlippingBinary 🤦‍♂️ Good job missing the point.

And you shouldn't assume so much. I'm a pro-gun-control pro-choice card-carrying democrat.

@FlippingBinary Not making something national news is hardly equivalent to "pretending it isn't happening."

National news needs to be far less sensational. Less reporting on local crimes and sports and celebrity deaths. Those all have their own dedicated news sources.

As for your final rhetorical flourish, let's say, hypothetically, the news reported every single abortion performed. Would you still stand by your question: "If that fact is so inconvenient to your politics that you have to complain about reality being reported, maybe reevaluate your politics?"
