I make no comment about the journalist but...what an odd job title from the BBC: "disinformation & social media". What does it say to lump the two together? How does it devalue public discourse on social media? Is there a disinformation & Murdoch media beat? A disinformation & politicians' beat?

Do you also watch the intro for every #HBO #Succession episode all the way through or are you a monster?

Important note for / , especially :

tools like can impressively improve productivity, but before using them, check with your employer/client first! Every client I've reached out to about this has wanted to run it past their legal department first (which is a really smart move on their part!).

DO NOT, under any circumstances, allow these tools to send client/employer data to the AI vendors (which is necessary for their operation) without getting client/employer consent first.

This will be a core tenet of for enhancing their services with AI assistants, so best get in the habit now.

Did my first dual flight this afternoon and I can't stop grinning.

There was quite a bit of wind, so I was learning the basic maneuvers in heavy turbulence, but that just made it more fun!

Does anyone else have a problem with the banks that are “too big to fail” scooping up smaller banks which do fail, at rock-bottom bargain prices?

Easy to miss in Mastodon's latest update, but the most-requested features are indeed coming "soon:"

"...quote posts, improved content and profile search, and groups. We’re also continuously working on improving content and profile discovery, onboarding, and of course our extensive set of moderation tools, as well as removing friction from decentralized features. Keep a lookout for these updates soon."

I'm pretty convinced at this point that some people just want to live in terror and actively seek out narratives to support that view.

Huh. Turns out about 80% of my massive dev rig was powered through one 30-year-old bulky ancient disgusting power strip.

I think if Bluesky had launched in November, I would have been curious. But I've been here for 5 months now and there's been a noticeable change in my physical well-being, including a drop in blood pressure.

The idea of a recreated twitter experience (with all the drama and mess) holds much less appeal for me now that my body's self-regulation is more stable.

May a thousand platforms bloom or whatever, I just hope there isn't a mass migration away from here. I'd be sad to lose this place.

Homemade french onion soup. Time consuming, but surprisingly easy. Also, absurdly delicious. Can't stop eating it...

Republicans are coming after a Nebraska state senator who stands against antri-trans legislation

The complaint against Sen. Megan Hunt states she could benefit financially from the failure of LB 574

A measure that bans gender-affirming care for those under 19

…Her child is trans. That’s the “financial benefit”

Maybe we should take a look at the stock purchases, kickbacks and rubles the republicans have?

Good for Wikipedia. More companies need to stand up to this sort of thing.

If lawmakers learn that poorly-thought-out internet legislation causes the internet to abandon them, maybe they'll think things through a little better instead of always shooting from the hip.

Got some sushi for lunch and they forgot the wasabi. So, I pulled out a tube of the stuff that had been in my fridge for ages.

The good news is that my sinuses are now very clear. The bad news is that I won't be able to taste anything for the next week or so.

It's crazy how much most restaurants water that stuff down.

This picture is going to be printed in history books as a turning-point for transgender people in the US. The open question is, which direction will the turn be in?

I don't know, and I don't have ideas for what I can do, but we are on the cusp of big, scary changes that will affect everyone, not just trans people, not just minorities.

If you were waiting for a call to action, here it is. They just banned her from the MT House using the rules of decorum. What better metaphor for where we are?

One Day Astronauts Will Be Breathing Oxygen Made from Rocks

When there's a permanent station on the Moon, astronauts will need a way to replenish their oxygen supply. Fortunately, there's an almost infinite amount of oxygen in the surrounding regolith, locked up with other elements like iron, aluminum, and silicon. NASA demonstrated that they could harvest oxygen from lunar regolith using the Carbothermal Reduction Demonstration device. Although it's relatively straightforward to do this with chemistry, the NASA instrument mimics the vacuum conditions of space, using the kind of power that would be available to future lunar explorers.

helpful future tip! you can identify actual smart people because they're usually humbled by the knowledge they've acquired and will be first in line to admit when they don't know something

there's some exceptions to this when sociopathy gets involved, but I've generally found it to be true
