Rant about a good song

I love the band Sonata Arctica. Their album "Pariah's Child" is fantastic.

But one of their cheesiest songs is one of my favorites. It's called "I have a right" and it essentially describes a "right" to encounter basic human decency, especially for children. The core chorus is ultimately "I have a right...to have everything I need to be safe to believe in something."

That... is not necessarily a right in modern society, as we typically understand rights. But maybe it's what we should be working towards.

The song also has a secondary message of giving the younger generation the space and freedom they need to mend the "embittered history" of their elders, which is another message I can get behind.

The song is played almost like an anthem, too, which adds to its uplifting nature.

Anyway, just wanted to rant about some music for a bit. Give it a listen if you want:

's response to nearly every request:

"Sorry, but you didn't say the magic word."

As a long-time customer of each of these brands, I just wrote each of them and asked them to stop advertising on X.

"Coca-Cola, Visa, State Farm" among the brands coming back, according to Yaccarino.

Why I don't like :

Oh, you want to host HTTPS? Install a self-signed certificate into Apache with certbot and Let's Encrypt. (That mumbo jumbo is the easy part, and is the same as Windows. But here's where it takes a turn...)

Oh, you want to install certbot? First, install snapd, a whole other framework for installing dependencies because apparently the one built into the OS isn't good enough.

Oh, snapd is mysteriously failing? Get to google, son.

Oh, Google has enshittified and there are no relevant results? Ahahaha 💩

So, anyway, apparently the answer was that at one obscure point in the process, I was supposed to type the word "socket" where every other service I've ever installed needed the word "service" and I didn't notice the difference. That's two hours of my life I'm never getting back.

Wait, what? How in the hell is it legal for one man to unilaterally remove an official that the people democratically elected?

This essay by @pluralistic perfectly captures my own reasons for taking a pass on Threads and Bluesky. ActivityPub is open and federated, and these attributes are important enough to outweigh its (current) relative deficiencies, both technical and social. Any walled garden, however idyllic, becomes a prison.

Sacrificing freedom for convenience is problematic. Sacrificing freedom for a brief period of convenience followed by endless exploitation is stupid.

I used to work at a restaurant that served these really good fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. They were made pretty regularly, so you'd never get a cookie that was more than an hour or two old. Despite this someone would inevitably ask for some fresh out of the oven. The problem with this was twofold:

1. They took nearly 15 minutes to bake, way longer than anyone was willing to wait.

2. If you know anything about baking soft chewy cookies, when they come out of the oven they are basically just molten goo, we had to wait 10 minutes before we were even allowed to take them off the pan.

So, we'd always tell people these things, and at least a couple times a week, someone would demand we do it anyway, and call the manager when we handed them a hot bag of cookie goo 15 minutes later. The restaurant eventually got rid of those cookies for something that was pre-made that tasted like Dollar Store cookies.

I thought about this a lot during the height of the Covid Pandemic, and every time a politician disagrees with a scientist about climate change. Anyway, welcome to Dollar Store Planet.

So, we're all about to have #zoom meetings where we read #Disney scripts to each other, yes? Got to poison that well.

The interesting thing about this post is that nearly every complaint is about a type of behaviour that is both common and expected among male-to-male interactions. We have a culture of pushing each other to improve. If you get a push you don't want, you just ignore it.

But, when it goes from male-to-male to male-to-female, suddenly these things are "hideously provocatively rude behaviour".

I wonder what that says about our society.

is just for . Different religions are different brands. Organized religion are the bureaucratic megacorps with highly-refined products geared towards the previous generation and many skeletons in their closets.
Like most things being marketed to us, it's not something we need; we can pass down morality to our children without a brand name. And, also like most things being marketed, it's fundamentally identical to all of its competitors... except for just a few tiny differences that are just enough to cause fierce rivalries between even the customers of these brand-names.

So, I guess all of this is really just to say: If you absolutely have to outsource your family's morality, please shop local.

As a Gen Xer, I confess that I did not expect a major portion of my midlife political energy to be spent on helping to finish off the Confederacy and finally end the Civil War.

If there were a hypothetical framework that would make it easier to create collaborative running in the , but a side effect was that it also made it easier to build servers, should that framework be released ?

The Fallout game series has officially ruined several old musical groups on Spotify. If you try to start an artist radio for The Ink Spots now, within a few songs it'll be playing some techno Minecraft remix song. I'm trying to listen to relaxing songs from the 1920s, not shitty songs from the 2020s!
