Today I built a silly webpage by hand in a couple of hours. (I’m not going to tell you what it was, except that it was frivolous af.)
I started out by looking for a template, but everything I found was way too involved, so I ended up writing the HTML and CSS from scratch, throwing it in a cloud-hosted directory, and nudging the DNS settings to point there.
This turned out to be a ridiculously nostalgic experience. I built a lot of weird little websites like this when I was about eleven years old, saving the HTML of sites that I liked so that I could access them when the phone line was being used by someone else, and changing pieces around to figure out how it all fit together.
It struck me that:
a) by this measure I’ve been doing web dev for almost a quarter-century now 😳
b) there is nothing stopping me from making websites this way. I can still write HTML and yeet it out there if I want to, no matter what it’s for. Pages load quickly. It’s not fancy. It works. Underneath it all, the web is still there.
If you feel so inclined, I can highly recommend seizing an afternoon, taking a silly webpage idea, and having a play.

I will never understand #parents that sue for-profit companies for not parenting their kids for them.
That includes #SocialMedia companies.
There's probably only one thing I really don't like about C# and that's that the String class can be written as a lowercase primitive.
It never ceases to amaze me how much big companies are willing to punish their legitimate customers to prevent bad actors from abusing their service.
Lack of accountability for one's actions is the #1 problem in this country, both in the private and public sectors.
Every other problem stems from it.

So let me get this straight. The GOP got rid of their Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, because he dared push through a continuing resolution on the budget with the help of mostly Democrats. So after cycling through four possible other leaders, they pick a guy with zero experience and tons of skeletons, who then proposes and pushes through…a continuing resolution on the budget with the help of mostly Democrats. You talk about saving Nature, but what is the preferred tool of conservationists worldwide? Photography and videography, now disseminated over the internet.
Mass-accessible photography has been a wonderful tool for human expression, social progress and accountability, and personal enrichment of life by allowing everyone to record part of their existence in this world.
Data storage runs on electricity, so it is primed and ready to run on clean energy where available. Not to mention that these energy concerns are minuscule in terms environmental damage done by the big players in more destructive industries.
This is such a weird environmental hill to die on. You are damning such a small, artful, human piece of the pie that genuinely brings joy and positive change into the world!
Besides, who are you to say that 90% of these photos are "crap"? I bet most of those photos mean something to someone, just not to you.
