Republicans are simultaneously ensuring Pennsylvania takes as long as possible to tally votes and citing that lengthy counting process as evidence of fraud. https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/coming-right-wing-attack-pennsylvania-vote
Another note for new #TwitterMigration folks like me: social norms here are that we don’t censor names like “Musk.” It shouldn’t be necessary, because full-text search isn’t really a thing and trolls are actually moderated.
If content is potentially offensive, put it behind a CW, but don’t “c*nsor” it because this breaks people’s filters (i.e., prevents them from being able to mute words).
The collapse of Twitter is a system breakdown. Mastodon and the fediverse represent something different: _system change_. From for-profit "Big Tech" to nonprofit, open source, community-owned public spaces.
System change is always harder than you think. It always incurs short-term costs, with hoped for long-term benefits.
The next few weeks will be really tough for the fediverse. Stick around, vibe with it, and you just might help us put a huge part of the web back in community hands. <3
So, it would seem that boosting liberally is much more of a standard practice here on #mastadon than retweeting is on #twitter?
Over there, someone who retweeted too much tended to be annoying. But since that's the only way to discover non-followed posts here, it seems to be more accepted. Do I have that right?
This one is for all the new people on #Mastodon: did you know that the #fediverse has more than just a microblogging replacement? And that they can all interoperate with your Mastodon account?

Republicans are threatening companies that pause Twitter advertisements with political retribution, extending and institutionalizing Trump's corrupt use of government. https://www.mediamatters.org/twitter/gops-corrupt-bargain-elon-musk
It just occurred to me why Mastodon works so well for social media in the public square.
It's nothing technical. It's moderation. And the incentives of the moderators.
Community moderators keep out the kinds of people that their communities don't want around.
Professional moderators keep out the kinds of people their employers (usually advertisers) don't want around.
That difference is ✨Enormous✨ !
So everyone go hug your instance moderators today. 🤗
The especially funny thing about all these #advertisers pulling out of #Twitter is how easy of a decision that must have been.
#twitter #ads suuuck. Out of all the main platforms, they consistently performed the worst back when I was paying for ads.
It would be so easy to drop them and lose that expense with the shitty ROI.
The local store is now also putting up santa clauses and snowmen and wreaths.
Meanwhile, here in the real world, it's November 7th and 80 degrees outside.
The "left" advocacy groups that called for a boycott include the ADL and the NAACP.
The threat is to sue Jewish and Black anti-discrimination groups for their speech, stemming from their alarm at his content moderation? https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/naacp-adl-coalition-call-for-advertisers-boycott-twitter-1234625113/
Thinking about creating a Mastodon server for 1A enthusiasts.
Two rules:
1) No hate speech / harassment / abuse
2) Anyone who invokes "fire in a crowded theater" or "platform vs publisher" unironically is banned until they publish an ad in their local newspaper formally recanting their heresy.
The whole Musk–Twitter debacle isn't just social media gossip, it's also one of the most obvious-in-real-time business screwups in history, from the enormous purchase price to backing out and getting sued to the extraordinary level of LBO debt to the erratic and incompetent management.
Folks on the birdsite are going wild after I shared this absolutely legendary response to a Nazi by @Gargron
I'll take this guy over Musk any day!
