Another instance, mastodonindonesia.com, is shutting down.

The @admin cites Mastodon's trademark policy as the reason he's pulling the plug at the end of this month.

This closure only affects 199 accounts.

However, Indonesia is a nation of 277 million people, and also the world's most populous Muslim nation. It needs instances!

I hope that this closure isn't too much of a setback for the Fediverse in Indonesia.

@atomicpoet @admin @fediversenews A trademark policy that require you do not use "mastodon" or "mstdn" in your domain name might actually make many more instances close in the future

A #trademark policy by a #NonProfit company that wants to spread the #FOSS and #fediverse idea globally needs a common language. A #brand or generic term are such a common language/term.

There are just about 10m users of #mastodon so far.
I would therefore suggest refusing the #mastodon brand only to instances that violate #HumanRights or clearly #discriminate against certain groups for #religious, #sexual, etc. reasons...

@HistoPol @aphandersen @atomicpoet @admin @fediversenews @Gargron You need to be careful how you word something ilke that - saying you don't allow discrimination against any group for religious reasons implies you must not discriminate against any group, which is probably not what you were intending. This is akin to the problem we Americans have with the First Amendment - saying that everyone is entitled to freedom of speech means the nazis can parade through your hometown (as happened in Skokie, Illinois). So you would probably need to include some exception for religious groups that engage in hate speech if you don't want them using the brand, but then you probably have to define what is hate speech.

I agree with your results, @Lunatech.

Yes, in an international context this problem arises.
However, the #FirstAmendment is peculiar to the #US (other countries might have *similar* issues, e. g. #France).
#Germany's regulations against #HateSpeech can be a starting point.

I have a short thread on this #1A issue here:
