This former CDC director writing on Medium about the state of knowledge about #LongCovid is very good and one of the recent pieces I'm most proud to be hosting.

But...
One of my hobbies is https://thriftmac.com — a collection of hundreds of free #Mac apps that I regularly update. They are all 100% free. I won't list anything with a free trial or in-app purchases. The site itself is also free — of ads and trackers. If you know of an app that should be added, please let me know!

@fsf it is irritating to have old files that you can't open anymore because you missed an update 5 years ago or maybe your software is not available anymore. Your own creativity trapped forever by #closedsource . That's the main reason I jumped on the #opensource wagon. That and a nice virus that made my HDD click until dead. Anyone remember that one? Back in 2005. All my early photos gone 🙂. There's 0, nothing Microsoft can say to make me ever buy into windows ever again.

Do you know Tauon Music Box?
It's a really cool, sleek music player. It has some really cool feature, like the ability to rapidly make new playlists, the search works a charm by simply typing something, it has multiple layouts. Take a look, it's a nice project!

In the process of making a different point, @mmasnick does a great job showing how deeply US #copyright law in 1790 differed from US copyright law today.

PS: Or how far the original US arguments for copyright fall short of justifying what copyright has become.
Next up: "Police Mugshot"
#DALLE2 here again being an outlier, like it specifically has parameters and filters to avoid spouting out blatant biases (unless you're a bit clever with the prompt, I guess...) Lest that reflects poorly on #OpenAI...
We'll shortly see more guerilla models do not have those....
No shit.
The Ultra-Rich May Actually Be Less Intelligent Than Lower-Paid People, Study Finds | IFLScience
10 years ago this might have been interesting. Now? After looking at how Musk has handled Twitter, and shown how little regard he gives to individuals' welfare, this is just going to be a factory town, more similar to the ones found at the beginning of the 20th century than anything innovative or revolutionary.

Question about security keys:
Everything I read tells me security keys are the best MFA option.
Yes, but, a PC Mag article (https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/so-youre-locked-out-of-multi-factor-authentication-now-what) about what to do if you lose it says most sites let you pick an alternative 2FA option on login, like SMS. Doesn't this mean a security key is useless at most sites since a hacker can just opt for the less secure MFA option like SMS after they do a SIM swap attack? What's the point of the security key then?
And this too. Physical keys are easy to lose, forget, and can get damaged. What if you're at the airport and boom, no key and no second, less secure option, is available because you wanted to make login ultimately secure? Is it worth this risk?
Do infosec specialists use only a physical key for personal account login?

NASA recently published images of the stunning progress Nepal has made restoring its forests.
This is thanks in large part to a plan to put communities in charge of conserving nearby forests.
Instead of planting trees, why not give forests back to people?

Michael Sainato: ‘It’s just crazy’: #Republicans attack US child labor laws as violations rise: Changes lawmakers are seeking, such as expanding types of approved work, will potentially ‘put kids in dangerous situations’
"As child labor law violations have been on the rise in the US, some state legislators are pushing for changes at state and federal levels to roll back protections in what some see as a threat to return child labor to the country.
The laws aim to expand permissible work hours, broaden the types of jobs young workers are permitted to do, and shield employers from liability for injuries, illnesses or workplace fatalities involving very young workers."
