4/ The studies cited for that hypothesis are not willing to say that they've proven it either.
3/ Note that the report does not say that social media is causing the youth mental health crisis. It includes as one of many hypotheses, including destigmatization of mental health, care access, economic factors, academic pressure, etc.
And then there's the whole COVID thing.
2/ It seems everyone just takes claims that "social media is psychologically harming kids" at face value. But is it really so?
Let's look at the link for the word "evidence." It directs to the Surgeon General's Report on Protecting Youth Mental Health.

1/ We'll no doubt hear the standard applause line fare at #SOTU2023.
But if the White House Fact Sheet is any indication, one thing we'll know for sure (if we didn't already) is this:
We have utterly failed to learn from our history of moral panics over media.
The fact sheet notes the deteriorating mental health of youth, and then goes for the easiest target to lay blame on: social media.
6/ If this doesn't all sound familiar, don't feel bad. You're probably just young.
Hell, I'm too young to have been alive during the 40s-50s, when Congress became very concerned that *comic books* were causing juvenile delinquency, and held hearings threatening regulation.
You know what the "comic books are destroying the Youth of America" also had?
8/ And then there was Rock n Roll. "Satanic" heavy metal was destroying the moral fiber of our nation's youth, so Tipper Gore set out to *do something* for the children.
Fortunately we had Dee Snider willing to go in and embarrass those clowns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Vyr1TylTE
7/ Psychologists willing to speculate that seeing violent crimes and romance in comic books had profoundly terrible effects on their psychology and inspired them to become rapists and criminals.
The result? The comic book industry was nearly destroyed, and had to impose a rigid private censorship code to avoid crushing regulation (ditched in the early 2000s when people came to their senses).
Oh, and the removal of race and gender issues from comic books. Neato.
13th in infrastructure? I have some bad news for you, Mr. President. The U.S. is 42nd in press freedom, according to Reporters without Borders. #SOTU
“Officials say Finland’s success is not just the result of its strong education system, which is one of the best in the world, but also because of a concerted effort to teach students about fake news. Media literacy is part of the national core curriculum starting in preschool.”
The new Bing improves on ChatGPT in some meaningful ways — but it has some odd misses, too.
Either way, today felt like a big moment in the shift to bringing AI into everything.

I filed a GitHub issue against a #Jenkins plugin at 9:30 this morning and by this afternoon, the dev cut had already cut a release that fixed the issue. I'm always amazed at the dedication of #opensource maintainers like this.
People have been gaslighting me for pointing out a lot of the chaos that broke out at the BLM protests in 2020 was intentionally orchestrated, but now there's proof.

It's kinda funny that multiple times in this video in which Marc Andreessen is in conversation with Adam Neumann (yes, that Adam Neumann) he mocks how as cities get successful, their residents don't allow the building of new homes. He specifically calls out SF. Yet, Andreessen himself is, famously, doing exactly that himself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgK9KW9APfA

Constituents of George #Santos, flanked by Reps. Dan Goldman and Ritchie Torres, demanded he resign — or that GOP leaders expel him.
Santos has, to date, rebuffed calls from scores of #GOP officials to step down.

Stupidly, I thought after the first progress bar was done, it would be ready…. Now on the second one, and this one has an even longer initial estimate.
