NEW: While corporate social media campaigns “raised awareness” around subjects like mental health and body positivity, young people shared their experiences in droves. Now, some colleges and jobs are holding it against them.

“I was just talking about how I feel. It’s supposed to be a good thing to do that,” said Aly Drake, who lost her spot on a college water ski team over her posts on TikTok.

Voters say it's GO time in Waterloo, Iowa

My colleague @KarlBode has the scoop on how Quentin Hart, the city's first African-American Mayor, is leading the charge to build a citywide municipal fiber network after years of frustration with the private duopoly providers

the slow but steady twitter brain drain continues.

every day another insightful, empathic twitter user leaves for mastodon, and is immediately replaced by six Elon fluffing tween cryptobros and a white supremacist influencer that makes twenty times your annual salary

While Nikki Haley was saying there’s no racism in America, a white supremacist was LITERALLY being sentenced for intentionally murdering Black Americans. America is not a racist country, but today's GOP is a white nationalist movement. My new article: deanobeidallah.substack.com/p/

that said this tech will be wonderful for people who want to quickly mass produce inexpensive clickbait and right wing propaganda, so that's exciting for a culture whose discourse is already idiotic and unintelligible

The robots aren't taking over. They're not falling in love. They're not feeling. They don't want to be alive. They're not evil masterminds. They create word patterns based off text on the internet. Is what journalists should be saying, not gee-whiz sci-fi LARPing about fancy autocorrect.

While I'm totes impressed by the level of *integration* you see in the #Mac ecosystem - apps being able to talk to the OS and call its services, apps being able to talk to other apps using a standardized interface of dictionaries and verbs, man oh man I *REALLY* want this for #linux

There's no reason we can't have it. People just need to be able to agree on standardized interfaces for things.

This is why I get kinda sad when I think about this stuff, because even things as simple as "Hey y'all we REALLY need to agree on how to cut and paste" turn into hard problems, and efforts like the Free Desktop project never really achieve their full potential.

I think sometimes Linux developers mistake standards for strait jackets as an absolute idea.

They're *TOTALLY* not. They *CAN* be if mis-applied, but modern marvels like the internet show that when we get broad agreement on how things can work, a thousand flowers can bloom *AND* we can improve our quality of life.

That was in Australia. Of course "the religious group had a connection to a similar group in the U.S., and officers had shared information found in text messages with the U.S. police."

#News from @jonkeegan: If you’re a Kroger rewards shopper, the chain is collecting info about you—and not just what you buy.

It’s building a profile that may include your race, financial status, and even inferred interests. It then sells insights to major brands like General Mills, CocaCola, and Kraft Heinz.
