Enshittification: First platforms want your attention, so they show you stuff YOU want to see. Then they want your money, so they show you stuff THEY want you to see. @pluralistic calls this enshittification.

Tiktok's enshittification (21 Jan 2023) >>> pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/pot

This excellent essay examines how Amazon, Google, Facebook, Twitter and Google, exploit algorithms to capture your attention, build dependency, and subsequently “monetize” you by feeding you shit.

Critical thinking

Beliefs have consequences. We must stop normalizing religious/supernatural delusions. Adults must teach children to demand evidence rather than accepting faith-based stories & conspiracy theories as factual. #ReligiousTrauma #science #criticalthinking #skeptic #exchristian #atheist

The next time you hear conservatives claim that overturning Roe was a win for the “pro-life” movement, remember that many of the same people wouldn’t lift a finger for universal health care.

The same Republicans railing against abortion in the name of being "pro-life" oppose:

—A living wage
—Climate action
—Gun safety
—Mask mandates
—Universal health care
—Home-care for the elderly
—Food stamps
—Ending the death penalty

The GOP is not pro-life.

An escalation in hate speech and violent threats on Twitter: "It’s very sad to see this thing that so many of us cared for and built being decimated piece by piece“

I'm not sure if it's my feed or broader but Twitter has become an alternate reality on the vaccine conversation where "the anti-vaxxers won". They don't mean this in the context of the messaging war, in which they did in fact succeed (as anyone who followed the last 7 yrs of narrative battles should have expected). No, they mean it as "the vaccines don't and never did work and the unvaccinated won because they're not going to spend the next five years worried about cardiac events."

Let me be absolutely clear: Abortion bans are not pro-life. They are pro-poverty and pro-inequality.

How can the US combat the spread of misinformation? Maybe by taking a page out of Finland's book -- media education in public schools. Middle school teacher Saara Martikka & the Natl Audiovisual Institute's Leo Pekkala share their efforts. #velshi msnbc.com/ali-velshi/watch/vie

**Beyond the Stupidity Defence** This is the "Buffoon Defence" As in 'Just because I'm waving a loaded gun around, doesn't mean anybody thinks I'll fire it". This is fairly close to an insanity plea.

The more guns in a society, the more gun deaths.

That's a fact. Not an opinion.

We should definitely blame politicians who won’t do what the majority of Americans want and what would be societally most beneficial - better gun legislation and addressing, not exacerbating, societal differences.

But perhaps some voters are somewhat to blame, too. Too many let them slide and don’t ask a representative or one running for office what their stance is. If it is pro-gun over people and no regulation, don’t support them and make your opposition known as widely as possible. There are groups fighting for regulation and for electing better people. Support them. Track your rep’s voting record on guns. There are things one can do short of looking at it every time and sending “thoughts and prayers.”

It's important to understand that the guys who oppose abortion rights believe that death is an appropriate punishment for becoming pregnant.

Women in states with abortion bans are nearly three times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth or soon after giving birth, according to a report from the Gender Equity Policy Institute. trib.al/GhLtwLM

What basic features are missing in ffmpeg in your opinion? Are there things you find annoying? What could be done better?

Let's collect those issues here. I may implement them in endemm (encoder and decoder for multimedia) or ffmpeg developers reading this may implement them in ffmpeg. 😉

Great point about building #FreeSoftware communities:

"Accept patches like Wikipedia accepts edits. Merge first, fix later, and discuss out of band. Do all work on master. Don't make people wait. You'll get consensus, after the fact."

Contributions typically happen when people have a few hours time because their kids are sleeping, time given by the employer to work on #OpenSouce,... Either they will have a great sense of accomplishment and stay or are disapointed and will hardly come back.
