Trying to make sense of Mastodon by re-reading Marshall McLuhan's Laws of Media.
According to McLuhan, every medium:
(1) improves or enhances something;
(2) renders something obsolete;
(3) retrieves something previously obsolete; and
(4) risks reversing into something extreme.
What do you think?
@llebrun This all seems so much more meaningful now—as forms of media rapidly turn over—than it did when McLuhan was alive. I would say 1, 2 and 3 and maybe even 4 possibly apply to Mastodon (though I’m not really sure of the difference between 2 & 3).
@Suzyanalyst1 2 & 3 would be (2) TV renders the radio star obsolete; (3) TV retrieves collective knowledge, etc.
