Tiny Privacy Tip 🔒:

You can use your Password Manager to keep track of the accounts for which you have requested data deletion.

1. Keep your login information as usual 🔑​

2. Add a note with the date and the link (or email address) where you placed your data deletion request 📆​

3. Add any important information to remember about your request, such as a request key/password and such 🗒️​

4. Try to login again into your account once your request should have been fulfilled (giving a few extra days). If your account is still active when it shouldn’t, escalate your request ​

The Respect for Marriage Act was passed by the Senate today. It is, in so many ways, an imperfect bill. It is also going to protect millions of LGBTQ families, and I’m grateful to Senator Tammy Baldwin for leading on it.

Having now been on #Mastodon for 1 month, a few observations:

- Mastodon makes me realize how much the #Twitter algorithm maximized user outrage to boost engagement for profit. Gross. Here, my feed is interesting & supportive.

- There's a culture of kindness - at least so far. It's extremely appealing & should be normalized on & offline.

- Beyond reactions to toots, people share songs, poetry & ask great questions. I can't remember the last time I found social media to be fun.

Why?

If its not a hashtag, its not searchable, so you are not protecting yourself from dogpiling.

If I don't want to see posts about Lord Voldemort, I'll have his name in my mute list. I don't want to have to make a million variations to deal with your *s or weird phrases and (implicitly) asking that i do this is too much. The more the person is inflammatory, the more your respelling is aggressively mute-dodging. (I'm not talking about accidental misspellings. People shouldn't feel like they need perfect spelling to discuss difficult subjects.)

If you are so concerned about naming somebody, put it under a descriptive CW: "the 45th president of the US", " Historical Nazis" etc, but use their actual name in the post.

1. A #flu 🧵
CDC posted the FluView that would normally have gone up last Friday today. It reports that 5 more children died from flu this fall, in Oct & Nov. They bring to 12 the number of reported pediatric flu deaths so far. There are always reporting delays; this number will grow, sadly.
The country is engulfed in #influenza-like illness, but that means different things in different places. RSV, Covid, #flu, rhinoviruses, etc. CDC says flu activity is elevated around the country.

Any moment now, as Christmas and (American) Thanksgiving get closer, people will start posting suggestions of things to donate to food banks and 'Reverse Advent Calendars'.

I can't stress this enough:
Just. Give. Money.

Food banks can usually get more bang for their buck than you can.
They'll probably be able to give you a tax receipt for money, but not for cans.
And it lets them buy, store, and distribute food in the volumes they need and can handle.
