People said they're interested in me talking about my experience as an immigrant in #Canada, so here goes. I'll call this #CanadianKvetches I guess.

I'll start with a positive, a big positive. Coming from the US, Canada is peaceful. Having lived in NYC for a decade, one might think it's that, but it's more than just NYC, it's generally being in a place where I feel people, at least most people, are reasonable. There's violence, but a lot less than in the US (and NYC is one of the safest places in the US). Police corruption and brutality exists everywhere, but in Canada, police kill 1/20th the number of people they do in the US, adjusted for population.

People are generally not angry, more laid back. It's not that conflicts don't exist, it's that they don't escalate so quickly. It's only when you stop needing to be afraid and tense all the time do you realize how much that tension affects you.

So for my first Canada Kvetch, it's not a kvetch at all but a cheer.

As Berlin hits 34C I recall writing a paper about global warming at school, over a quarter of a century ago. It was 100% in the popular consciousness back then, and was certainly known about for decades before that.

Raising awareness isn’t the issue. The only thing that counts is action.

@skye @alexl @EU_Commission 🙄 I do not even think you read my post (or rather just skimmed it). I am concerned about my sites being fined &/or shut down as they do track IP addresses & store usernames of accounts (both for federation & blocking) for security reasons (my instances were apart of a weird mass #Fediverse target months ago).

I will consult with legal experts to see if I am in the clear. If not, I will migrate to avoid being fined.

Whether they admit it or not , almost everyone I know feels entitled to democracy and freedom. That could prove to be a key reason why we may lose both. Donald Trump can only save himself by winning this election. And in this fucked up country of ours, he could win again. And by the time he gets done, there will be nothing left. He won't make the same mistake and leave career bureaucrats in high office. He'll purge them all. They've already acknowledged that plan. Stay afraid.
