For the past year+ I've been on the sidelines watching @timkmak file story after amazing story from the front lines of Ukraine for NPR, where I'm an editor. He's brave, smart, efficient and modest.

I was stunned to learn he was part of the NPR layoffs.

But he IS starting a Substack. And even though I could easily go broke subscribing to all the worthy newsletters out there, I did pony up for this one. It's worth it.
