I’m still on Twitter (reading & responding to others only). It’s been educational to try to learn about what’s currently going on in #Russia both here and there. Twitter used to be the place for “up-to-the-second news”, but with all the promoted posts & hashtags falling out of favour it’s become much harder to find that information there. At the same time, lots of journalists (citizen & pro) have a new focus on the Fediverse, which has improved news quality here. It’s fascinating and exciting!

seeing some people cheer for wagner as it means "an end to the war" — that's just not the case. the fighting between #wagner and #russia started over how to kill ukrainians more efficiently. there's no real interest in ending their war against ukraine.

there's no good party in this civil war. the best thing you can hope for is that they take each other down.

This kind of "live coverage" of big events is what I was missing over the last year of Mastodon.

Lovely to see it reaching critical mass to support this use case.

Wish it were happy news (a lot of innocent folks will die, regardless of outcome), but this was one of the things pre- musk Twitter did well.

I heard about this on Mastodon first, so success .

It’s weird, until Space Karen took over, Twitter used to be the go-to place during any sort of major world event—it’s now impossible to tell real accounts from bullshit so it’s completely useless for this purpose.

The one big thing and outstanding feature they had going for them, utterly destroyed.

Over the next few hours you're going to see a lot of shaky footage of military equipment on roads and rail cars with claims of it's en route to a conflict zone. Don't believe any of it and check everything twice before you believe it. #Russia

I see a lot of people cracking jokes and talking about #popcorn and such about what's happening in #Russia. Yes, Schadenfreude for #Putin, I get it. But if a real civil war breaks out in Russia, the situation will get much worse for everyone before it gets better.

Also, time to stay away from real-time news despite the temptation. It's in moments like these that the disinformation mill is running full power.

@Pepper It seems to be clear that Leonard Leo & his SCOTUS agents will face the time, when they'll be going to regret, that they dared to attack the Fourteenth Amendment as part of the Reconstruction Amendments incorporated into the Constitution after Civil War, in exchange for luxurious trips paid by revanchist, rebellious, anti-constitutional & anti-democratic billionaires tied to cases before the Supreme Court of the United States.
