The problem with Gnome is that they think they have complete control over their own destiny.
They do not.
They actively work against concepts like customization and user freedom, removing features in an attempt to fulfill their vision of the desktop they think you should use, and trying to build their own, separate platform instead of accepting that they are part of something bigger then just themselves.
It's as if Gnome is just a Google who's main product is a Linux desktop environment.
