I'm starting my slow, cautious, move from Windows to Ubuntu.
First, a laptop I hardly use.
Documenting issues, before I start on my older desktop.
Issue # 1: Do not let cat play with flashing light on installation thumb drive, during installation.
@EricLawton You’re gonna have a time! I typically say use Mint for first time users but Ubuntu works well. Gotta get used to copying your experience from Windows as closely as possible. On the positive side, most of needed software is already installed. Have fun!

Linux Mint comes with a built-in system restore utility, Timeshift. This alone is enough for me to recommend Mint as a first distro for basically everyone.
That said, Ubuntu and Linux Mint have very high cross-compatibility - you can install Timeshift on Ubuntu.
