Your boss isn't going to fire you for asking for a raise. Whoever originally said that was trying to fool or intimidate people into not asking for a raise. It’s a big pain in the butt to find, hire and train a replacement, so they will avoid that. They might not give you the raise, but they won’t fire you.
The reason why you would want to join with many other workers to ask for a raise is to intimidate your boss. If you all stop working at the same time, that can cost them a lot of money, so they are more likely to just give the raise rather than risk losing even more money by having their workforce walk out on them. However, if conditions are such that they might not lose so much if everyone walks out, then they might not give the raise.
All the rest of the legal stuff is just one side or the other using politicians to try to make laws to shift that basic equation one way the other.

>"i had a boss threaten to fire me..."
I assume that was a middle manager of some sort. Treating employees with disrespect like that is the quickest way to get them to unionize. You could easily get that guy fired by his boss if you wanted to.

it was the store manager (office max), and most of us were in our early 20s. so yeah, it happens. and no, we didn’t do anything about it because we didn’t even know it was wrong when he said it. i only learned it was illegal a few years after i left the job.

i had a boss threaten to fire me for discussing pay with coworkers (what he did was illegal, mind you). i don’t think this happens in higher paying jobs, but i could definitely see it happening in minimum wage jobs. some bosses i’ve had are just jacked up on their sense of superiority and would absolutely fire folks for less.
