I had a 97 day streak going on Duolingo that I deliberately let lapse just to spite that fucking bird.
Gamification is great at making things more compulsive as behaviours, but also excels at making them not be fun for their own merits any more.
I really like learning French. I really hate being hassled to do it by some fucking internet bird who docks me points if I don't do it at the correct times of day and tells me I have to stop for several hours if I make too many mistakes.

I think a lot of such sites were created with Americans in mind who don't function the same way I, a European, function. Therefore people like myself find them infuriating, irritating or just simply downright unusable!
