Rule No 1 of Hunting 101 is:
You do not fire unless you have a clear view of the target and can identify it!
The Italians and to a lesser extent the French are absolute past masters at shooting their dogs, other people's dogs, innocent bystanders, hikers and god knows who else but I would have expected better from the Irish!
