Shall I repeat for the god-knows-how-many'th time: wearing a mask protects mainly other people, not yourself. It's to stop any viral matter you might cough or sneeze out from being projected on to other people. That's why surgeons wear masks when doing surgery - it's to stop bacteria and viruses from their noses and mouths from contaminating the patient's surgical incision!
If you want to protect yourself, you need to be wearing an 'N95' or 'KN95' mask. These are much more expensive than standard surgical masks and rather less comfortable to wear BUT they do actually filter out the droplets of body fluids coughed up by other people that contain viable viral loads!
