And this video is older but I'm adding it this year too - what being a climate scientist is like, in our own words. Micheal Oppenheimer, Radley Horton and I explain. youtube.com/watch?v=aJ737NsLl7

Climate change is due to our cumulative emissions, not just our emissions today.

While rich countries have started decreasing emissions in recent decades, rich country emissions are still responsible for a substantial majority of the 1.2C warming to-date carbonbrief.org/analysis-which

@debianpowers oh and if you didn’t commute untill now don’t be surprised that you’ll eat more

@debianpowers sweet bike. Lights, fenders, rack and panniers (if you carry anything on your back you’ll get sweaty real fast). Always carry a spare inner tire, tire levers and a pump, and buy a bigger floor pump for your home. Also learn when to clean and lube the chain and how to check when your breakpads are worn out.

“With the average price of a new electric vehicle climbing to over sixty thousand dollars, might e-bikes be a more affordable solution to ditching gas powered cars?”

Not for everyone, but for many, obviously.

How do you make a thread on Mastodon?

Pretty much the same way as on Twitter, with one difference. You compose the first post, publish it, then reply to it, then reply to it again, and so on. But there's one difference. If the first post is Public, you can make all the others Unlisted. This way, people can follow the thread by clicking on the first post, but their timeline isn't clogged up with all of the other posts.

There's a housing crisis in many cities. But cars can park free. Why not claim public street-space for those who need it? If you disguise your shelter as a polluting, duly-licensed private vehicle, like artist Michael Rakowitz did...
...the authorities should be fine with it.

I find it ironic that Andrew constantly references . Guy that thinks women can’t fight or drive, that lusts after money and status references a movie writen and directed by trans women, that in the first scene has a woman beat up several policemen; and best of all that has a cigar smoking traitor sell out his friends just because he wants to be rich and famous. And wants to forget the truth and be reinserted in the matrix.

It wasn’t an accident. Cities and suburbs that prioritized cars over people, and designed exercise and activity out of daily life, were deliberately planned and built.

The better cities that are the solution will need to be deliberately planned and built too.

@skdh@nerdculture.de trouble is that people that insist on questioning the science usually have some dogmatic ideas that they don’t allow to be questioned, or they get very upset.

In 2024, Paris will ban non-essential vehicle thru-traffic from its city center. The plan is expected to cut around half of daily car journeys thru the core. Residents, public transit, emergency vehicles, & people with disabilities will find it EASIER to move. Via @citylab

@mejs ima smisla jedino ako ju gledaš kao poruku samim Rusima koji žive u siromaštvu i u strahu od mobilizacije. U stilu nek je i susedu crkla krava.

@mejs blesavi komentar. Ako nisi preporucam Range od Epsteina. Podnaslov je How generalists triumph in a specialized world. Tak da, da - ima smisla imati tete koje znaju latinske deklinacije i popravljati bojlere, jer ih upravo to čini odličnim tetama.

“If the general public doesn’t understand science and technology, then who is making all of the decisions about science and technology that are going to determine what kind of future our children live in, some members of congress? There are only a handful who have any background in science at all, and some of them don’t even want to know about it.” — Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan passed away #OTD in 1996. In his final interviews he left us with two messages that are even more relevant today: one emphasizing the importance of a science literate public, the other a warning about how hard it is to extract ourselves when we’ve been conned.

@kate great post! I’m Croatian and have worked for years in Slovenia. What really blew my mind is that within 2 million people there are 4-5 completely different dialects and temperaments. Thus understanding that Roglic is Štajerc and Pogacar Gorenjc gives you even deeper level of understanding. Srečno!
