My wife and I are going through a bit of a rough time at the moment. We're privileged to be in a better position than a lot of people right now, but we're stuck indefinitely outside our country of residence (China) and surfing from couch to couch. Most of our money is in a Chinese bank account we can't access while outside China (looong story). If anyone can offer me some paid work I can do remotely from #Aotearoa (#NZ), that would really help.

If the only way you can help is a boost, cool :)

For some reason, the WHO still says you probably shouldn’t wear a mask

In the United States, face masks are required in more and more places as part of the fight against the coronavirus. Many stores require them. Some governors are telling people they must wear a mask, even outdoors. Some journalists love scolding pedestrians and politicians who don’t wear them.

There are still a few days to go in the Month of LibreOffice, May 2020! Help out and win cool merchandise – test bug reports, translate the software, assist other users, and try your hand at other tasks: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl

@zleap Indeed you can. In fact my own incomplete book uses this format.

If you really want to see an example you can check out my book. I think it serves as a pretty nice example of the layout: jeffreyfreeman.me/frequency-do

@polarisfm@www.librepunk.club @amolith I was under the impression that updates are given to a certain part of the user base at a time. Once a few of those computers have generated some beneficial telemetry by crashing, the devs can fine tune the updates and release them to a larger number of users.

@maltimore You know, I've been thinking about that too. I just need to figure out where would I get the time to start that project. It will take a while to read enough to make educated decisions on what to install.

@milan At some point they also started using pentalobe screws. Then they moved on to hiding the battery inside the case. Next step was to attach the caseless cells with glue. Why don't they just cast the whole board in resin to make it all a single module.

@amolith Are you sure you didn't SSH into the museum of technology?

In any case, letting your IT department know about the security aspects of the situation might be a good idea. Using an ancient version like that might be attributed to just being lazy, but there are also good reasons to stick with a certain version number. It's just that then you would also have to isolate that computer from the rest of the world in order to be able to safely run your ancient code you can't upgrade to be compatible with newer versions of Java.

@lordalveric Write a script that DDoSes it with randomized login attempts.. they wont have any way to verify which logins are real or not without using them at github.com and ultimately get throttled as they use up their IP pool

Beware of the glthubs.com phishing attacks. I nearly fell for this one.

The only thing that saved my bacon is that I should already be logged in! Then I noticed the funny-looking domain name.

@andredo But obviously that's just the beginning of a sigmoid curve where the maximum value is 24 h/d.

@matt My solution to that problem was to buy laptop with AMD hardware. Sadly, the WiFi was still trash and one update sealed the deal about a year later. That's went my current laptop has an Intel GPU and WiFi, which allows me to enjoy the full glory of Fedora every day.

The more I use #Fedora, the more I like it as a day to day driver. If only using Nvidia weren't such a pain in the ass on it.

@sir Well that's just one way of connecting several words together. German, Swedish, Finnish and many other languages have something similar, but what makes English interesting in this case is the way it's shortening the words.

Well im back in my Philly home for a bit. I must admit I really missed my beast of a computer and my Electonics lab.

covid19 ; capitalism

@McKenna @OCRbot Actually, the economy of many companies is very fragile; sort of like a house of cards. It's bad PR to let everyone know that, so they just don't advertise it.

I like to think of systems like this as a small warehouse with a constant flow of packages entering and leaving. When both flows are in balance, everything works beautifully. However, if one flow is ever so slightly greater than the other, you'll have a catastrophe in a month.
