We want to abstract away the contingencies and declare a result as inevitable. But the only tapes we have to replay are bound to the contingencies they captured.

Those contingencies *occasionally* aggregate, but only ever as an exception, never as a rule.

When you try to edit away the contingencies and replay the tape, your result will be a useless prediction-model.

Earth is gone. And there is only one way to make another world like that wonderful earth of the early 20th century with that precarious mix of biological diversity and technology: there is only one way to bring earth back as it was— and it simply cannot be rushed. For, while it is true that seed banks and DNA libraries contain much of the needed information these are woefully incomplete.
