Uspol, press freedom

WaPo reports : presidential admin tracked 20 AP phone lines to track leaks... "The president said press freedoms must be balanced against the protection of U.S. personnel overseas."

Local timeline is more and more dominated by bots, you can of course silence them, but it probably doesn't look attractive for new users.

Uspol

the administration prosecuted leakers, shutout the media, and used lie-detectors on staffers, criticized by NYT Washington correspondent as "the most closed, control freak administration I’ve ever covered"

This was the Obama admin.

It's increasingly seeming as if the problems brought with Trump aren't problems (just hysteria for news viewership) or weren't brought with Trump.

Life advice

Maybe don't adopt an extreme all-or-nothing opinion for every "thing" the Internet gets mad about.

Ignore me if you must, but know that every toot you volley and riposte will slow-roast your soul in a smouldering furnace of rage whose embers are forever refuelled with the bathroom stall scrawls of the ignorant and the wicked.

Lay down your button-mashing canon. Make a hot cup of your finest tea, put on some comfy slippers and watch silly YouTube videos instead. 👍

Don't @ me.

Alex Jones gets banned from birdsite and the alt right loses their minds. If any of you tell them about the fediverse, I will strangle you.

@rks There are right leaning servers and left leaning. The left tends to block the right, the right blocks no one. QOTO has a pretty healthy mix of left and right.

@rks Nope, it's actually quite evenly spaced - I'm friendly with left, right, libertarians, and "alt-right trolls". Plus you're in the instance, the most inclusive instance of them all. Hoping to see your intro!

personal birdsite musings

I went from a complete Twitter addict to barely looking at it over the past few weeks. Observations:

1) Twitter is still really useful for aggregate stuff -- "what is Seattle talking about", etc.

2) I do NOT miss all the Twitter rage.

3) I've been reading news and longer articles more! But I think I still waste as much time as before, just with different things.

4) I really like how the longer post size here feels more like conversations, not edicts in the ether.

Mastodon is written in Ruby. The creator of Ruby, @matz is on Mastodon (albeit inactive). Mastodon uses Sidekiq for background processing. The creator of Sidekiq, @mperham is on Mastodon. It's kind of a bizarre feeling.

Adversarial collaborations sounds like an interesting way to execute an argument. Looking forward to see what has come out of this experiment.
