Hunterston Brooch

This stunning brooch was found at Hunterston, Ayrshire during the 1830s. Made about AD700, it is a highly accomplished casting of silver, richly mounted with gold, silver and amber decoration. It is one of the iconic objects of the Early Historic and Viking periods. It is now in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. #Archaeology

@sco7sbhoy Jut curious-Have you got an analysis of the metal at all? It does look a good casting and they're usually hard to get with a pure metal.

@SteelFolk I don’t have that information to hand, but may be researchable given its importance.

@sco7sbhoy Some smiths seemed to know it was a good trick to add something to the Ag before casting. It doesn't always look natural, but how they found out is what fascinates me.
