@sciencebase Do you get Crane Flies in actinic traps? Little bleeders love it inside at night but they are all boringly alike. Is there anything good about them?

@sciencebase I gather so, but all mine look the same and show off by hanging down by one leg from the ceilings.
@sciencebase I was taught to call them "Jinny Spinners" which is more suitable for the spiders really. We get loads of those as well and their webs make the place look like a Adams Family set. Have you noticed how they tremble when you touch them?
@SteelFolk Niiice...I know a few people who tremble at spiders!
@sciencebase It's more like vibrate, really. If it's defensive it is a bit feeble. Can't see a Blue Tit even noticing. But things like that aren't often a waste of time, I guess.

@sciencebase Just watched a vid of a virus injecting its DNA. The syringe 'squashes' due to its material transforming like steel does when you quench it. Incredible one-way event. We don't really know much about nature at all yet.

@sciencebase The word wasn't mentioned but that's what it looked like. The transform is a 'displacive' one which doesn't break any bonds but distorts to another crystal structure.

@SteelFolk There is evidence of cognition and memory in insects...and of course the birds can do far more puzzling than we expect from the structures in their brains. It's incredible...
@SteelFolk Yep...and then there's Daddy Longlegs and Daddy Longlegs Spiders to contend with...one of which might be a synonym for cranefly...
