The different colours are present because of the way different minerals on the surface of the moon scatter sunlight to different degrees.
@sciencebase Relate thing: Do you know why wavelength dispersive analysis works with low atomic number elements like C and O, but energy disp doesn't (as in what we get in an SEM)? Grateful for ant ref you have about it.
@SteelFolk Is it to do with their energies being less widely spaced than heavier elements? So harder to distinguish with the resolution of current technology?
@sciencebase Using cation analysis and assuming the usual oxide types are there is limited cos their melting point is often important.
