@moonbin Ah, yes. I am familiar with this breed. The Rainbowed House Panther.

Long Thing about Fridays.

@cm I love Tel Aviv, but South Tel Aviv where I live? Friggin' filthy. It needs the daily services.

@Demo318 I live in a country where immigration is a major part of the culture. Jewish immigration, specifically. I am, in fact, an immigrant. My views are colored thusly.

Long Thing about Fridays.

@cm It's not something I noticed at first. It's something I just sort of came to realize as I lived here... this city breathing a sigh.

And some of them are Jewish, some of them aren't. City services have to run every day.

@freemo No problem. New place, new set of social standards. We all learn as we go!

Long Thing about Fridays.

Oh boy, my weekend is about to start....

But, I didn't tell you guys, yet, about the oddity of Friday Morning in Tel Aviv.

On Thursday night things start to get calmer. By the time Friday morning has come, the whole city feels quieter and lazier as it prepares for Saturday.

As some of you may be aware, Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath. In traditional Jewish time keeping a day is sunset to sunset. At sunset the new day begins (Which is why Jewish Holidays all seem to start the 'day before' the official holiday).

I live near a fairly busy intersection- certainly not the busiest in Tel Aviv, but it's right down the street from the Central Bus Station. Friday morning sees fewer buses. They relax the schedule, since traditionally people have Friday off in the Israeli work week. Your standard '9-5' would work from Sunday to Thursday.

Friday, though. It's like the whole city relaxes. Breathes out, prepares for Saturday. The whole city feels different. You have to experience it, at least once. Imagine if New York or London had like 1/3rd the traffic heading down one of their busy streets, just because it was Friday.

No buses run on Saturday. The garbage man goes by, but that's the heaviest vehicle that zips by my apartment window that faces the street. There are a lot fewer vehicles.

And my entire body is used to it. I sleep deeper on Fridays.

It really is a magical experience. I hope you all get to check it out sometime.

@iwoc I used to be a Corrections Officer in Columbia SC. Prison labor is a big part of the SCDC prison plan.

Personally, I think slavery is wrong- and that is the way they get things done with the 13th amendment. Slavery needs to be truly abolished if we are to call ourselves a civil society.

@commandelicious Christmas in Germany has got to be interesting. Something I'd like to check out. I'm almost certain it will include Chocolate and alcohol.

@marmite She lost her internship over this, actually. But Homer Hickam is trying to help her out, iirc. Because Homer Hickam is friggin' awesome.

Hello everyone, I'm excited to try out Mastodon! It may take me some time to warm up but I would like to get in the habit of posting regularly.

I am a physics phd student researching dust transport kinetics to create better dose predictions of radioactive release exposures. I also teach college physics in a variety of settings (classroom/lab, studio, online). I'm driven by the scientific method and improving the health and understanding of our society. Feel free to chat!

@KingTherapy Honestly, I work in CS online with primarily American clients. I was born and raised in the USA, but have since emigrated to Israel. (That has it's own whole story and mess of problems, but tl;dr: I'm happier here and healthier here. )

You don't need to convince me that American consumer culture is toxic. I can assure you it is, and I have stories to support it.

@KingTherapy The society was always going more global. With the advent of the internet globalization is almost impossible to stop.

What is important in this sharing of cultures is that we go in a positive direction. There isn't anyway to stop what's happening, so we might as well direct it as best we can.

@KingTherapy I don't really have an opinion on that, to be completely honest.

One of my favorite female led bands, Screaming Females.

Covering Taylor Swift's Shake it Off. Just fantastic.

@commandelicious @pkok Any chance you have access to a hot water bottle?

I have ongoing issues with my shoulders (Bursitus and tendonitus) and I can't sing the praises of the hot water bottle enough for my pain relief.
