Harris说过一句话很有道理的话：“理想主义者认为，眼前发生的事情是不重要的。犬儒主义者认为，长期以后发生的事情是不重要的。现实主义者认为，眼前做什么或不做什么决定着长期以后会发生什么。”(An idealist believes the short run doesn't count. A cynic believes the long run doesn't matter. A realist believes that what is done or left undone in the short run determines the long run.)拒绝犬儒主义不等于回到天真的理想主义(所谓的“青春无悔”)，而是要从失败的浪漫理想主义汲取教训，以务实的态度来对待未来的希望，既不放弃希望，也不盲目乐观。
