@dougholton @edutooters I definitely have not seen a mass exodus of educators from the bird to here. I engaged with other educators regularly on there, and maybe 5% (very unscientific) are now on here. I know that it's a process, and I think a question I have been asking is how do I (we) as a community invite and make welcome educators, especially those from historically marginalized backgrounds on here.

If you think about how educators arrived on Twitter you will identify thought leaders promoting themselves on other platforms e.g conferences and podcasts as available via Twitter as a primary vector.

Unless the thought leaders move, the mass of teachers won't follow. I have been sending emails or filling out contact forms for people I follow asking for their mastodon address to let them know there is a demand.

@ZingerLearns @dougholton @edutooters another key vector will be professional organizations like @ACM and @csteachersorg

Finally we need the curriculum providers who offer technical support to have a presence as well (for computer science some of these would be code.org, CodeHS, AFE ProjectSTEM, Test out.)

@scerruti @dougholton @edutooters @ACM @csteachersorg great points. I do wonder about the vs. grass roots educators and their respective communities. I actively avoided the capitalistic self promoters who had little to offer on the bird app but platitudes and feel good nonsense, they also tended to have a very particular following vs those who were genuinely engaged in equity focused education work

@ZingerLearns @dougholton @edutooters @ACM I have been crying out in the wilderness for educators to find smaller instances for this reason. Let the fediverse deal with the capitalistic self promoters and build a PLN of truly aligned interests. This was my motivation for starting a computer science education focused instance.

I don't believe that computer science educators are as well served being on mastodon.soclal or even mastodon.acm.org. edutooters group can serve as the glue among us.

I don't need the mass of teachers.
I would just like enough fellow teachers in order to have a conversation between a few colleagues who can understand and relate to one another.
