@elduvelle @ninokadic I actually prefer a desk reject in 2 weeks. At least I can move on then and have some closure. Too many cases of desk rejects taking 6 months or our for review and rejected in 9 months, papers have a shelf life.
All this to say, that the whole academic publishing system is broken, and really a massive revenue generator for a small group of companies on the backs of academics.

This is definitely an issue. I appreciate that my institution and the largest university system contributing to these journals took a stand against them.
That said, you are absolutely right. In my field (education) there are two sets of journals, one more research focused, highly valued and prized in the academy, and one practitioner focused (for teachers and teacher educators) that is largely ignored in the academy, but has direct impact on teacher preparation and teachers teaching. I also think about fields like climate change, with these theoretical and practical audience divides.
I do wonder when and if the academy as a whole will do some deep reflection and reform/revolt/abolish some of the archaic systems in place designed to perpetuate this problematic system.

We collectively need to do a better job helping faculty see that if you want to be a good researcher, you have to be a good teacher.
How do grad students learn to be good researchers?
How do students become inspired to be the next generation of researchers.
I engage in and lead many professional developments and a few learning communities, especially for grad students and future/current educators knowing that it's not really part of my job and that it doesn't "count" but is important enough! We need institutions to take stronger stances around these issues.

Slightly different but related - I was recently talking w a potential client about a project developing a community of practice. I'd used the term a few times before they asked "what is that?" I was pretty surprised but explained and then they told me that teaching was the last priority at their institution bc they're a research institution.
I am still feeling some kind of way.
