@snickerfel @ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @randy @ungrading @edutooters there is a great #ungrading Substack as well. It’s called “Grading for Growth(https://open.substack.com/pub/gradingforgrowth?r=todh7&utm_medium=ios). What I appreciate about the publication is how wide-ranging the discussions are. Lots of places to start depending on your context.
@scerruti @ZingerLearns @dougholton @edutooters
I don't need the mass of teachers.
I would just like enough fellow teachers in order to have a conversation between a few colleagues who can understand and relate to one another.

@randy @ungrading @edutooters for sure, clear, early and open communication are essential. The good news is, locally, I know many K-12 teachers who have moved to #ungrading and in one case an entire grade level team. I hope to see an entire department soon. The reception has been overwhelmingly positive when the ungrading is clearly explained, especially in terms of reduced student stress and that their learning will be recognized.
@ungrading @edutooters as I work through the growing stack of resources for #Ungrading, I am still present to a stakeholder who hasn't been mentioned so far, but to whom I owe some amount of accountability: parents and guardians. As much as ungrading seems to point toward teacher and admin education, and that students need to be informed clearly of the expectations, so too do the parents of these high school children who have their own agendas and expectations for the system.
@scerruti @dougholton @edutooters @ACM @csteachersorg great points. I do wonder about the #Edutainers vs. grass roots educators and their respective communities. I actively avoided the capitalistic self promoters who had little to offer on the bird app but platitudes and feel good nonsense, they also tended to have a very particular following vs those who were genuinely engaged in equity focused education work
@mybarkingdogs@ohai.social @ungrading @edutooters for sure. This also exposes the whole "but in the real world" or "this is to prepare you for the real world." The reality is that we all do need some basic skills, but to your point, different people will be passionate about, be excellent at different things, and in the "real world" we will most likely work with others in teams and collaboration.
@ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @ungrading @edutooters indeed, my whole class is project-based, an easy thing when teaching a creative elective subject that involves using technology (ie digital media)
The part I'm most struggling with is what the scaffolds look like, how to write effective rubrics and how to get more student peer assessment/feedback integrated into the process at regular intervals.
Great piece here on how standardized testing is rigged to place minority students at a disadvantage - and then used to justify disadvantaging minority students. #education https://race.undark.org/articles/born-of-eugenics-can-standardized-testing-escape-its-past
@mybarkingdogs@ohai.social @ungrading @edutooters thank you for sharing this, and it works as a reminder that most traditional grading and assessment approaches work to continually marginalize and sort out students with disabilities, language learners, and those who are not as good at writing intensive tasks.
@lewriley @KaiserScience @brndnpink @randy @ungrading @edutooters You touch on what I think is often not said loud enough about #ungrading, and that is, if it is built on trust and a common goal/vision there is virtually no pushback or ill will from students, which leads to a more productive learning community
@mathewoakes @brndnpink @lewriley @randy @ungrading @edutooters of course
@KaiserScience @ZingerLearns @brndnpink @randy @ungrading @edutooters Yes. I am very fortunate to have the amount of freedom I do, and further that I work with colleagues in my department who have very similar sensibilities. I should also clarify that I do ask students to complete weekly lower-stakes assessments (sometimes quizzes, sometimes case studies). It's not an assessment-free zone. However, many of these assessments allow revision based on feedback.
@KaiserScience @ZingerLearns @brndnpink @randy @ungrading @edutooters I teach physics to pre-health students preparing to take the MCAT and also to physics majors preparing to take the GRE subject test in physics. These high-stakes assessments are entirely external to my courses. This frees me up to focus entirely on facilitating learning. Learning how to learn physics trumps maximizing coverage in my courses. I have had zero pushback from students on this so far. #Ungrading
I’m really thankful to have a few weeks between semesters to decompress. The fall was a great teaching semester, but remarkably difficult in other ways (which I’ll share at some point). I took the first week of break to #rest while my kids were still in school. We’re doing all the baking and playing in the snow this week, but I wouldn’t have the energy I do for it without that break last week. Don’t let anyone tell you that #IntellectualLabor isn’t #labor or that #rest isn’t a #HumanRight.
@mathewoakes @udl thanks for making this point #UDL and UDL approaches are key to #Ungrading as is a fundamentally humanizing pedagogy.
I both try to embody and we have our students read and practice UDL based on this book.
I’m glad to see the growing #UnGrading community here in the fedi. I’d love to see the same emerge for #UDL #UniversalDesignForLearning. To that end, I thought I’d create a Guppe Group for UDL: @udl
And if you’re looking for a UDL starting place: https://www.cast.org/impact/universal-design-for-learning-udl
Ultimately, I think that UnGrading is a UDL strategy and addresses the hegemonic barriers the UDL framework misses (tho CAST is working on this with the #EquityRising project).
