I followed a similar trajectory. I figured following the syllabus and turning assignments in on time was a student problem, not a me problem. After learning more about learner-centered and inclusive teaching, I developed a much more learning outcome-focused syllabus. I did not have the flexibility to move away from grades but I stopped testing and adopted a much more holistic assessment model.

@dougholton @edutooters I definitely have not seen a mass exodus of educators from the bird to here. I engaged with other educators regularly on there, and maybe 5% (very unscientific) are now on here. I know that it's a process, and I think a question I have been asking is how do I (we) as a community invite and make welcome educators, especially those from historically marginalized backgrounds on here.

@randy @brndnpink @lewriley @ungrading @edutooters yes, the rub is how to provide feedback between grading periods and have enough structure that students can link course activities and their outcomes as evidence for their learning as progress, where it becomes increasingly self-regulating and self-reflecting.
This is why scaffolds are critical and project type assignments are critical because they allow students to show growth, improvement, and learning

@ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @ungrading @edutooters you are literally describing my process with my students in my own high school class. I only provide letter grades at the quarter and semester boundaries.

Any time a student asks me what their grade is, my first response is "what do you think your grade is?" and we have a conversation about their learning.

But I'm under constant pressure to have things in grade books.

"We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology."

- Carl Sagan

I just realized I no longer miss Twitter at all. The varied expertise here is simply superior. This is what civilization is. A global conversation shared among real people. No bots, no rage. Just what's on your mind, and your mind is hugely varied. It's all wonderful wherever you are on the many islands of the Federation of Mastodonia

@WillRichardson this feels a lot like "let them eat cake"
I always saw this as a good opportunity to talk about privilege and marginalization and social/environmental responsibility. That figure on CO2 generation by income level has been a good conversation opener.

… Perhaps the best way to understand Mozilla is in the words of their president on their new VC arm:

“We see a lot of startups who want to tackle things like privacy, trustworthy AI, and alternatives to Twitter… alternatives are not going to emerge unless there’s founders and companies who build them. And the founders are not going to build them unless there’s money aligned with their vision … So I think we need to still be about commerce and creating wealth”

Hey newbies!

Good you’re here!

TIP: please add profile and header pic, and write a bit of a bio before you start following people.

We’re all a bit damaged by twitter, and sceptical to empty accounts

I often wonder how to get "successful," privileged schools to understand that the meta changes and crises happening in the world will impact even their kids. So many of them seem to be living in bubbles, claiming immunity to technological, environmental, economic, and political shifts that are existential in nature. I wonder in the end if their fall will be harder because of it. #justsayin

@brndnpink @ZingerLearns @randy @ungrading @edutooters I moved to ungrading during the pandemic. Pursuing yet another cheating case and the adversarial nature of that dynamic was the last straw for me. I had been using traditional assessment methods since 1997. The work of Susan Blum, Jesse Stommel @Jessifer, and Josh Eyler @joshua_r_eyler reached me at the right moment for me to feel ready to make a massive change. It has gone suprprisingly smoothly and improved my teaching and quality of life.

A great special issue of JAID on "Rethinking Multimedia Design for Learning" with articles by Mayer and others extending this space. We have one on mediating artifacts, invoking some Vygotsky and CHAT to discuss political, social, and ethical dimensions of #edtech and learning materials.

I started using very traditional very oppressive grading as a high school teacher. Participation points, behavior focused rewards systems and all that stuff. I didn't transition away from that until I started working and focusing more on teacher education, and I did not go full bore until the start of the pandemic and now only grade at the end of the term when I have to. Working on some papers around this, and in seeing some interest I'll share what our ungrading community came up with as key considerations for ungrading that you might find interesting.
It would be great to grow a community around @ungrading on here.

I really don’t have anything more to say about ChatGPT, Galactica or whatever else they decide to put out next. We’ve written a paper about it, dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3442188 dealt with enough based on that. We need to spend our time slowly working on the technological future we think should exist, and we can’t do that if our time and imagination is hijacked by Open AI, the longtermists or whoever else.
