@actualham I am really interested in the ripple effects, intended and unintended consequences of this. The negotiated base pay for graduate students is going to be $34,000/9 months for 50% time, and about $45,000 for 50% over 12 months, or equivalent to $90,000/yr ft. Plus full tuition remission, health benefits, robust child care reimbursement and leave. Campus are not getting additional funding to cover this from anything I have heard.

Be assed to give Black folks the same access to equitable infrastructure as other folks. We saw the same thing during Hurricane Katrina, Black neighborhoods got hit disproportionately harder than their white counter-parts, it's the same story over and over. If anything comes out of this tragedy, I want people to finally stop gas lighting us about this country treating Black people as disposable and actually fucking do something about it.
My spreadsheet of #COVID19 studies showing longer-term damage to the body has grown to 100 studies. Here's a link and a thread of some of the most interesting. The conclusion is that COVID can attack many parts of the body, remain present in the body, increase risks of serious cardiovascular, brain, lung and immune system disorders, and increase risk of death and disability. Stop taking it so lightly!

Leave it to the #GOP to give us all an object lesson in cruelty to other human beings during the holiday season.
@Mr_n_wood also useful to follow @edutooters and/or @edutooter and use that in toots #edutooter #edutoot
Putting it out there that teachers migrating from Birdsite should toot with #EduTooter for a while so we can find each other.
Over the past few years, we @mikrobiokosmos@twitter.com offer a 1-d workshop on scientific writing and publishing, mostly for MSc and PhD students. Here is a list of relevant material which we would like to expand, so please feel free to use it and also send me your suggestions/additions; please share/circulate.

I don't know if people have been paying attention to what's been going on in Buffalo, New York but the city was hit with a terrible storm over the weekend, which resulted in a disproportionate amount of people on the majority Black East Side either becoming stranded in the freezing weather or losing power in their homes for days, resulting in families having to stay in their homes without any heat.
There are three confirmed deaths so far, but I suspect that the death toll is much (cont)
It has been interesting watching people and the burgeoning Mastodon community grapple with the tension of the great Twitter migration. The spectrum ranging from "how do we replicate Twitter without a tyrant" to "how can we reinvent microblogging" to "what the heck is a toot" is one layer, and the noob to "I have been here for years" is another that have revealed the complexities and alignment/misaligned of values and visions.
Reminder that if you're feeling lonely today, see this hashtag:
➡️ #JoinIn
There are lots of people (myself included) keeping each other company on there, with all kinds of posts from hot chocolate recipes to historical photos to horses covered in tinsel to just general thoughts and chatter.
You can use the hashtag however you want, serious or fun, and anyone using the tag is welcoming of replies and discussion so it's a great way of striking up a conversation.
See you there! ☃️
COVID minimizers and deniers have been wrong every step of the way:
- Mass infection didn't give us herd immunity, it left millions dead/disabled globally
- Masks and stay-at-home orders reduced spread
- Schools were transmission hubs
- Kids have died/gotten long COVID
- Vaccines have saved millions
But being wrong hasn't stopped them from publicly fantasizing about holding public trials/executions of public health officials.
We need diverse representation not only so every kid can see themselves as the hero of the story, but so that every kid can understand that *other* kinds of kids are *also* the heroes of the story.

Any American who is glad they don’t “live in China” should
give this one a read. Left to its own devices, the major difference between autocratic techno-dystopia and the capitalist version is simply a matter of who is programming the computer.

Tracy, when I've been over on twitter in recent weeks asking people to please come here I've gotten brigaded by these ElonBoys who say stuff like "it's a bubble" & "why are you scared of free speech" & "you'll be back!" & "and yet you just posted here, curious!" etc.
They are *terrified* of mastodon, and the open ecosystem generally. Terrified people are really leaving and scared to set foot in here due to a perception that moderation is INTENSE (let's keep them thinking this!)
@mathewoakes this is why I have 2-3 gifts in my secret drawer ready to go, because you just never know ![]()
@juddlegum show me your budget and I will tell you your values. Appreciate the point about how uncontroversial massive defense and police spending is, while any kind of social supports, welfare, or education are highly contentious.
Also reminded that these are "we the people's" tax dollars.
We talk a lot about how DIVIDED our political system is.
But one thing that Democrats and Republicans both consistently support is massive increases in military spending.
