@ungrading

I have really taken up a term that a student shared last semester as it relates to framing ungrading.
A frequent challenge and question is what is good enough from a student work perspective?

The student shared that he consistently focused on giving a "good faith effort" which is interesting in that students often share that they could have done more, and feel they could have done more (can't we all say that about anything?)

I really like the personal and collective accountability that comes with looking at, and thinking about "good faith effort."

There's evidence of social-class bias in teachers' assessments, but there's also a systemic component: bit.ly/3GJQOdx. It's not just individual attitudes but the type & purpose of assessment itself: When teachers must use grades (that can "select the best students") rather than feedback (to "help students learn"), their evaluations unconsciously favor privileged students.
Thus, an emphasis on "meritocratic selection might actually contribute to the reproduction of social inequalities."

Nobody:

Absolutely nobody:

One day I’m going to teach a course called Cringe 101: Please, Just No and this will be part of my curriculum

I ended class by framing an assignment for individuals and groups to conceptualize and design a disruptive encounter for a specific everyday context. This is our first effort as a class to take up an educational design stance in response to the subject matter of the course or our own life experiences.

The goal is for individuals to select an injustice to disrupt in some creative way in an everyday encounter or context. It could be a provocative thought, a counter-story, a conversation, etc.

I am deeply skeptical of any narrative that suggests pandemic #LearningLoss is an actual phenomenon and not just a means to continue to degrade US public #education.

AI services like ChatGPT hide copyright infringement by keeping their information sources a trade secret. Transparency would provide evidence that could be used in a lawsuit. Microsoft and OpenAI told a court to dismiss a lawsuit (for their unlicensed use of open source code from Github) because nobody could prove they had standing - were personally infringed. Microsoft is devouring the whole Internet for ChatGPT and keeping it confidential.

I just discovered I'm an Abolitionist. So were the people who lived in this rural village in crossfire of the war in Bleeding Kansas. Realizing once again, with the news from Memphis, it's the same fight.

@juddlegum @edutooters this type of policy and actions should scare us and move us all. This is not a Florida and Texas problem. Book bans are endorsed state-wide there, but I see lots of districts in places like California and New York, where school board level elections yield similar policies.

3. The implication is that teachers were covering up their books to attract attention and could have done it more subtlety.

Saunders replied: Did "anybody say ban all the books, remove all the books, cover every book, no."

THIS IS NOT TRUE

AND I HAVE PROOF

2. At a Manatee school board meeting Tuesday night, DeSantis-endorsed board member Richard Tatem asked Superintendent Cynthia Saunders: "[There] wasn’t a direction from you that said, 'You will cover up your books or turn them around to the wall'?"

1. On Monday, I reported teachers in Manatee County, Florida were told to make the books in their library inaccessible to students

The report included images of bookshelves covered w/construction paper

Since then there has been an effort to BLAME THE TEACHERS for overreacting

Study (N=500) finds when men's masculinity is threatened at work (like holding a "female" job), they are more likely to engage in harmful behaviors (like mistreating coworkers). When women's femininity is threatened, they are not more likely to cause harm. hbr.org/2023/01/research-what-

""We found that men often felt a lack of autonomy after they experienced a masculinity threat (or even just thought about a time in the past when they experienced such a threat), while threats to a woman’s femininity had no such impact on her perceived autonomy."
