@maria Hmmm. I’ll call bull*hit on the #CollegeBoard ‘s response. They make money from AP tests being taken so of course when the racist governor of Florida started yelling and screaming about the audacity of including topics like BLM and teh Black gays in a discussion of Black history, they did what he asked. The #antiracist response would have been to refuse to change the curriculum.
@maria we do (respectfully) disagree. What will they do to support a teacher or students or school that runs into legal jeopardy for studying some piece of this course? If FL continues to disallow the course, will the CB allow other AP courses in the state? Will they still hold conferences at Disney? They can support with actions AND words. To this point they haven’t, and they have been shockingly naive all the way to the top of the org.
@maria it’s okay. No clear actions delineated. Also, this part from todays NYT piece: “And there was a preamble that the College Board said will now accompany other A.P. courses as well: “A.P. opposes indoctrination. A.P. students are expected to analyze different perspectives from their own, and no points on an A.P. exam are awarded for agreement with any specific viewpoint. A.P. students are not required to feel certain ways about themselves or the course content.” 😳😳😳
New German study of middle-schoolers: From grade 5 to grade 9, kids' (especially girls') well-being declines, as does their experience of autonomy support (teachers' encouraging them to ask questions and valuing their perspectives).
The more perceived autonomy support, the better that kids fared: https://bit.ly/3Yonl0m

Not just states, districts, many in 🔵 states.
As expected, more states are following the Florida playbook. Folks In likely states concerned about #bookbanning should keep an eye on their state legislatures and share such information when you come across it.
HT for this post regarding New Hampshire.

Only 4% of clinical trials in the US used diverse participants, representative of the population.
Dr. Julia Liu of Morehouse School of Medicine is trying to figure out ways to improve the diversity of clinical trial participants. She says many researchers need to work on recruitment - #Black patients just aren't being asked to help.
We dive deeper into this issue in this week's #podcast, and look at the implications for #PrecisionMedicine

A key feature of the reactionary project to roll back American democracy in order to impose straight, white, patriarchical priorities on the rest of us is the Supreme Court's effort to "elevate religion over all other elements of civil society": https://is.gd/DZxdIK

Here’s the deal with poppies. You don’t have to go to Walker Cyn, or Lake Elsinore, or Antelope Valley if there’s traffic (there’s traffic).
Most SSE facing slopes that get green after some rain and sun have a pretty good chance of having poppies as weather shifts to spring if there’s been water. If you find a place that blooms, it’ll bloom another year under similar conditions (or better with better), so it’s worth revisiting.

@ZingerLearns This and perhaps also journalists or their editors looking to manufacture controversy and drive traffic.
@lewriley I find the "so you're saying no deadlines" to be a very unsophisticated and bad faith counter argument by inflexible and traditional instructors who don't with to engage in meaningful pedagogical conversation.
I always imagined that when I finished my book I would discuss it and share about it on twitter. But I stopped using twitter on December 16th, when I decided I couldn't abide by Elon's ownership behavior.
It's a sacrifice of book sales and our message to not be on twitter, but it also doesn't really feel like a choice because I just can't.
I appreciate you taking an interest in my book and talking with me about therapeutic inclusion programming here on mastodon.
I’ve been a teacher in elementary school and an adjunct professor of education for the past 30 years. What DeSantis is doing with education is fascism pure and simple. And the College Board going along with the whitewashing of the AA AP courses is not only shameful and a threat to our country and to democracy! I’ve lost my faith in the College Board and any of us who are in this field need to make our voices heard!!
