The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words.

Genocides do not start with mass murder. That's where they end up.

Genocides & other mass atrocity crimes begin with words - specifically, with powerful people dehumanizing a minority.

Once they are seen as less than human, anything is possible, even mass murder.

There's misinformation floating around about Mastodon. Clarifying things:

1. Mastodon doesn't rely on volunteers. It's a registered non-profit that employs people. Kind of like how Wikipedia and Mozilla are non-profits that employs people.
2. Many instances are run by volunteers but not all.
3. Mastodon is just one part of the Fediverse. Benefits of decentralization is that anyone can build on open protocols.
4. Mastodon is big, but Flickr and Tumbler are bigger -- they're joining the Fediverse

If you are outraged about Congress' handling of the railway strike, join me in demanding that President Biden sign an executive order guaranteeing at least seven days of paid sick leave for railroad workers.

If these workers are vital to the economy, why not treat them as such?

There are people on this platform who want no politics.
We didn’t move over from Twitter to talk about kittens everyday.
We needed a place to carry on our work. To carry on fighting injustice, racism, misogyny, antisemitism and anti-LGBTQ hate. Because these things are important no matter what platform we are using. That was the whole point of our #twittermigration
We don’t have the privilege to be quiet.

United Federation of Instances was recently discussed on a russian podcast. I cant understand it myself but someone told me about it.

The UFoI is really taking off, and its been what, 2 or 3 days now! This is very exciting.

@brasst @wfryer yes, the addon was easy to install and work.
Going to do some experimenting!

Report finds faculty diversity isn't meeting student needs

Faculty diversity is positively associated with student success across a variety of metrics. Black and Latino students are more likely to graduate when they see themselves represented in their instructors, for instance.

@brasst @wfryer this looks pretty cool. Definitely going to give it a try next term. There are times when a quick video comment would be much better, less prone to misunderstanding and clearer than typed feedback.

@wfryer nudged me to blog about how I use Screenpal to create customized video responses in the Comments on Google Classroom.

Proof that the new "fediblock" on the wiki run by Paula intentionally suppresses counter-evidence and proof towards block entries. Despite the fact that I provided tons of proof that show the "evidence" provided for a block against QOTO is false they refuse to updatte the block with the additional evidence and effectively suppresses countner evidence.

This is why there needs to be Due process like im trying to build with the and not just one dictator named paula cherry picking what evidence she thinks is valid and blocking the rest.

Here is a link to the discussion if you want to see it first hand (screen shots included). I highly recommend everyone leave a comment expressing your concerns for visibility:

@TechNews this also makes me think about the move to reduce the size of schools as well. Thinking about the 3-4000 student high schools and how some are reconstituting as 400-500 student schools within schools.

It may well take years to fully understand what is happening right now with social media in general and with the #Twitter->#Mastodon migration in particular. Keep in mind, it is just a single month since Musk took over Twitter. One month. And we are already seeing major effects with a speed that has no equivalent historical precedents on the Internet or even more broadly in technology or society. We are riding the whirlwind and where it will take us in the fullness of time we can only begin to guess for now.

> Expecting people of color to be in the room to help white people learn about race is yet another example of privilege. Being in a space where white people are starting to wake up to their white cultural conditioning is heartbreaking for me. It is a pain that is felt deeply. I ache for my ancestors and my ancestors’ ancestors. A sadness comes welling up, and it feels like drowning. While there are some people of color who are up for being in conversations with white people about race, this is a gift offered in the service of collective liberation, and it requires tremendous energy, patience, bravery, and effort. Deep love for others might also bring us to this work. "I love you enough to be on the front lines weathering your arrows of confusion. I love you enough to hold the pain you’ve buried deep, deep down until you’re ready to claim it." It is not every person of color’s work to do the work of liberation in this way. Please don’t expect it.

There are so many ways to do #ungrading "right." Trust with students is key. Let's also trust instructors to choose ungrading styles that suit their particular contexts.

Railroads made $21 billion in profits in the first 9 months of 2022.

Guaranteeing 7 paid sick days to rail workers would cost the industry $321 million/year.

That's just 1.5% of those profits.

Congress just rejected sick leave for these workers.

It's profits over everything.

The precedent is that working people deserve paid sick leave.

Joe Manchin sounds like he OPPOSES adding paid leave to the rail contract.

“I'm very reluctant about setting a precedent for us to be involved,” he told me
