Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.

Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their famous model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.

How many discoveries & innovations of #women do we attribute to the men who took credit for their ideas?

Most of the #education people I know on here do higher ed.

That's good, but I'd like to follow more #K12 #educators.

With the last new-user-wave settling in, who are some of my fellow #teachers on here who work with K-12 students?

26. More reporting from Gizmodo that Musk’s entire justification for the suspension of journalists is BS

Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

@juddlegum the fact that Musk has this much time to comment on and antagonize people on the bird app makes me wonder who is running the businesses. This doesn't seem very "hardcore" to me

The surge continues.

Averaging 3000 to 4000 new users per hour. Mastodon continues to run pretty smoothly. Over 70,000 new users in the last 24 hours puts us on track for over 80,000 today.

Great appreciation for Mastodon instance operators! Most instances are funded entirely through donations, so if you can swing it, think about supporting your instance. Check out the /about page (eg https://[instance name]/about) for a donation link.

Last night was about @elonmusk@twitter.com sending a message to journalists that he OWNS THEIR ACCOUNTS and journalists need to be mindful of not pissing him off.

The only appropriate response is to reject this kind of bullying.

Whatever happens, happens.

Elon being Elon is familiar -- so familiar that it's no longer even particularly grotesque. But Elon fans tying themselves in knots trying to explain how WELL ACTUALLY all of this is PERFECTLY CONSISTENT with free speech absolutism he promised . . . . well, that's showing some new lows in groveling and abasement.

"It is unknown how Musk will manage Twitter moving forward. His statements about protecting free speech, for now, are just promises. And those promises are complicated by his historical hostility toward speech he perceives as damaging toward his economic interests."

@eosfpodcast I am sorry I missed the original post of this, and really appreciate a light being shined on how race, power, and privilege play out with the bird app and quitting.

Twitter was transformed into a vital tool the Black community used to amplify its collective voice to protest injustice, organize, commiserate, and spread its unique brand of tastemaking cool, humor and wit. In 2019, I wrote about how for Black people, quitting Twitter was never an easy cut-and-dry proposition as it is for those far more privileged. Revisiting this piece now is very bittersweet. #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter

Any serious effort to engage faculty in the student success movement will require grappling with the realities of faculty labor and limits on their time, Jody Greene writes.

I see folks saying that they hope to engage more here than they did on the bird site and not “just boost and favorite.” Remember, boosting here IS engaging. There is no algorithm pushing content into people’s timelines. Instead, we together are creating the flow of posts across and around instances.
