“If people want to stay on Twitter to debate fascists, more power to them, but there is a danger in conflating Twitter the technology & digital space with Twitter the people. The platform is made up of people. Musk bought Twitter, but he did not buy the communities that exist on the platform” - @hypervisible and @Kishonna

Not great! Chicago Public Schools has spent $308 million on computers and other technology since March 2020, "But the district does not have a clear, detailed plan for using the new devices to improve instruction or a reliable system to track what technology campuses have and how they use it."
Feels like the kind of environment ed-tech companies/consultants can exploit to work their imaginaries to full (and lucrative) effect.

👋👋👋 to everyone joining #Mastodon right now! Three #tips:
• Start by adding your profile and cover photos and a bio.
• Post a hello and a bit about yourself with the hashtag #introduction.
• Don’t approach this site as if it’s #Twitter. Have conversations, follow folks you find interesting and enjoy your time here!

@juddlegum Billionaires should not exist, and the societal structures that allow and promote them need to be changed.
I guess this would be a good time for an official #introduction
I am a STEM teacher educator, directing an undergraduate program and teaching science teaching methods. I am a former high school science teacher and school administrator. I think about culturally responsive teaching, #NGSS and phenomena based instruction.
My work focuses on preparing socially just teachers integrating climate/environmental justice
I have been #ungrading for 2 years and have been part of a great community developing my practice. I have increasingly focused on interdisciplinary teaching.
I enjoy hiking around the hills and mountains of Southern California.
@thehill I have deactivated my bird account and mostly avoided the related drama, and really have been focused on reconnecting and build a social justice focused STEM educator and teacher educator community on here, but the fascist stuff going on the bird app really begs the question of who is going to stay on there.
@mathewoakes I feel this intensely as this term ends.
@juddlegum I really hope that you and other journalists are able to find platforms like Mastodon to continue to report on and to use as a way to communicate with the public and have an audience.
I am increasingly convinced that Musk's and many of his investors' intent was to destroy the bird app as an information platform and they are as happy with it dying or turning into 4Chan if it means silencing voices they see as critical.
Not sure how much longer I’ll be allowed to be here
STEM teacher educator. Humanizing teaching and learning. Believer of student brilliance. Luddite. Disbeliever of silver bullets. Nobody is coming to save us. #Edutoot #Ungrading #STEMed
