It may well take years to fully understand what is happening right now with social media in general and with the #Twitter->#Mastodon migration in particular. Keep in mind, it is just a single month since Musk took over Twitter. One month. And we are already seeing major effects with a speed that has no equivalent historical precedents on the Internet or even more broadly in technology or society. We are riding the whirlwind and where it will take us in the fullness of time we can only begin to guess for now.

> Expecting people of color to be in the room to help white people learn about race is yet another example of privilege. Being in a space where white people are starting to wake up to their white cultural conditioning is heartbreaking for me. It is a pain that is felt deeply. I ache for my ancestors and my ancestors’ ancestors. A sadness comes welling up, and it feels like drowning. While there are some people of color who are up for being in conversations with white people about race, this is a gift offered in the service of collective liberation, and it requires tremendous energy, patience, bravery, and effort. Deep love for others might also bring us to this work. "I love you enough to be on the front lines weathering your arrows of confusion. I love you enough to hold the pain you’ve buried deep, deep down until you’re ready to claim it." It is not every person of color’s work to do the work of liberation in this way. Please don’t expect it.

Railroads made $21 billion in profits in the first 9 months of 2022.

Guaranteeing 7 paid sick days to rail workers would cost the industry $321 million/year.

That's just 1.5% of those profits.

Congress just rejected sick leave for these workers.

It's profits over everything.

The precedent is that working people deserve paid sick leave.

Joe Manchin sounds like he OPPOSES adding paid leave to the rail contract.

“I'm very reluctant about setting a precedent for us to be involved,” he told me

4. The truth about SBF's political spending is an example of his duplicity. But, more importantly, it illustrates how the public has no idea who is actually funding candidates in the United States.

a reminder that rail workers’ wild demand is simply to get a few paid sick days and *not be penalized* for taking time off for illness… during a pandemic.

It is academic job offer season. Don’t leave resources on the table. My coauthors and I wrote a piece on all the things you can negotiate for in a start up package outside of the salary (specific to political science, but probably similar in econ, other social sciences). cambridge.org/core/journals/ps

I hope that one day platform’s like Mastodon are the norm. No more for profit social media. No central billionaire owner.
For us, it makes it a much more organic, logical and pleasant experience.

2. @BernieSanders@twitter.com and a group of House progressives objected to Biden's plan, saying that the rail workers deserve paid sick leave and the railroad companies can easily afford it.

That's not unexpected.

1. Fearing economic disruption, Biden called on Congress to pass legislation preventing rail workers from striking, imposing a contract that includes no paid sick leave.

But an unlikely coalition is pushing back.

Ignoring the pandemic doesn't make it go away. All it does is disproportionately shift all of the burden of the pandemic on to the people who are the most vulnerable and have the fewest resources.

A massive legal and PR effort has been launched to kill offshore wind in America, arguing the renewable technology hurts the environment.

Who's behind it? A climate denial group, heavily funded by the fossil fuel industry.
