Building Trust & Community in a #Gradeless Classroom from @TheresaWalterE1: If the traditional measures we have for telling ourselves where we stand are removed, are we going to have to learn to trust ourselves?

In 1925, Dr. Cecilia Payne completed her PhD thesis, described as “the most brilliant ever written in astronomy.” At a time when few #women entered academia, Payne discovered what the universe is made of. Her work began a revolution in astrophysics.
Dr. Payne-Gaposchkin became the 1st female professor & 1st female department chair at Harvard. Given most of us remember names like Darwin & Newton, we should also celebrate Payne. #science #space

Over 8 million people using Mastodon now. It is hosted on over 22,000 servers, but like with email, everyone can communicate with everyone else.
Since no one person or company owns those servers, no one person or company can buy them or break them. #Mastodon #TwitterMigration
United Federation of Instances hasnt even launched yet and already has 200K members,

Now seems like a good time to talk about how far-right extremists are using the Overton Window theory to force their ideas into the mainstream. The premise here is that today’s fringe ideas/beliefs can become tomorrow’s normal by shifting the boundaries of acceptable discourse. You do that by introducing people to more & more extreme ideas, so everything else seems reasonable in comparison.
eg, when “praising Hitler” becomes the comparison point, low-key bigotry suddenly doesn’t seem so bad. 1/

This morning I gave my last "real" lecture of the semester!
I led students through a workshop about #DesignJustice thinking in chemical engineering and my students really engaged with it 😊
My slides were heavily adapted from materials from the Design Justice Network. If you want to see them for yourself, lmk!
The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words.
Genocides do not start with mass murder. That's where they end up.
Genocides & other mass atrocity crimes begin with words - specifically, with powerful people dehumanizing a minority.
Once they are seen as less than human, anything is possible, even mass murder.
👉 You can speak out loudly today for the rights of others, or you can stay silent & wait for tomorrow, when your rights will be taken away too.
There's misinformation floating around about Mastodon. Clarifying things:
1. Mastodon doesn't rely on volunteers. It's a registered non-profit that employs people. Kind of like how Wikipedia and Mozilla are non-profits that employs people.
2. Many instances are run by volunteers but not all.
3. Mastodon is just one part of the Fediverse. Benefits of decentralization is that anyone can build on open protocols.
4. Mastodon is big, but Flickr and Tumbler are bigger -- they're joining the Fediverse
There are people on this platform who want no politics.
We didn’t move over from Twitter to talk about kittens everyday.
We needed a place to carry on our work. To carry on fighting injustice, racism, misogyny, antisemitism and anti-LGBTQ hate. Because these things are important no matter what platform we are using. That was the whole point of our #twittermigration
We don’t have the privilege to be quiet.
United Federation of Instances was recently discussed on a russian podcast. I cant understand it myself but someone told me about it.
The UFoI is really taking off, and its been what, 2 or 3 days now! This is very exciting.
Report finds faculty diversity isn't meeting student needs
Faculty diversity is positively associated with student success across a variety of metrics. Black and Latino students are more likely to graduate when they see themselves represented in their instructors, for instance. #Diversity #NewStudy #education

Proof that the new "fediblock" on the wiki run by Paula intentionally suppresses counter-evidence and proof towards block entries. Despite the fact that I provided tons of proof that show the "evidence" provided for a block against QOTO is false they refuse to updatte the block with the additional evidence and effectively suppresses countner evidence.
This is why there needs to be Due process like im trying to build with the #UFoI and not just one dictator named paula cherry picking what evidence she thinks is valid and blocking the rest.
Here is a link to the discussion if you want to see it first hand (screen shots included). I highly recommend everyone leave a comment expressing your concerns for visibility:
