@snickerfel @ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @randy @ungrading @edutooters there is a great #ungrading Substack as well. It’s called “Grading for Growth(open.substack.com/pub/gradingf). What I appreciate about the publication is how wide-ranging the discussions are. Lots of places to start depending on your context.

@scerruti @ZingerLearns @dougholton @edutooters
I don't need the mass of teachers.
I would just like enough fellow teachers in order to have a conversation between a few colleagues who can understand and relate to one another.

@ungrading @edutooters as I work through the growing stack of resources for #Ungrading, I am still present to a stakeholder who hasn't been mentioned so far, but to whom I owe some amount of accountability: parents and guardians. As much as ungrading seems to point toward teacher and admin education, and that students need to be informed clearly of the expectations, so too do the parents of these high school children who have their own agendas and expectations for the system.

@ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @ungrading @edutooters indeed, my whole class is project-based, an easy thing when teaching a creative elective subject that involves using technology (ie digital media)

The part I'm most struggling with is what the scaffolds look like, how to write effective rubrics and how to get more student peer assessment/feedback integrated into the process at regular intervals.

Great piece here on how standardized testing is rigged to place minority students at a disadvantage - and then used to justify disadvantaging minority students. #education race.undark.org/articles/born-

@KaiserScience @ZingerLearns @brndnpink @randy @ungrading @edutooters Yes. I am very fortunate to have the amount of freedom I do, and further that I work with colleagues in my department who have very similar sensibilities. I should also clarify that I do ask students to complete weekly lower-stakes assessments (sometimes quizzes, sometimes case studies). It's not an assessment-free zone. However, many of these assessments allow revision based on feedback.

@KaiserScience @ZingerLearns @brndnpink @randy @ungrading @edutooters I teach physics to pre-health students preparing to take the MCAT and also to physics majors preparing to take the GRE subject test in physics. These high-stakes assessments are entirely external to my courses. This frees me up to focus entirely on facilitating learning. Learning how to learn physics trumps maximizing coverage in my courses. I have had zero pushback from students on this so far. #Ungrading

I’m really thankful to have a few weeks between semesters to decompress. The fall was a great teaching semester, but remarkably difficult in other ways (which I’ll share at some point). I took the first week of break to #rest while my kids were still in school. We’re doing all the baking and playing in the snow this week, but I wouldn’t have the energy I do for it without that break last week. Don’t let anyone tell you that #IntellectualLabor isn’t #labor or that #rest isn’t a #HumanRight.

I’m glad to see the growing #UnGrading community here in the fedi. I’d love to see the same emerge for #UDL #UniversalDesignForLearning. To that end, I thought I’d create a Guppe Group for UDL: @udl
And if you’re looking for a UDL starting place: cast.org/impact/universal-desi
Ultimately, I think that UnGrading is a UDL strategy and addresses the hegemonic barriers the UDL framework misses (tho CAST is working on this with the #EquityRising project).

@ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @randy @ungrading @edutooters
I followed a similar trajectory. I figured following the syllabus and turning assignments in on time was a student problem, not a me problem. After learning more about learner-centered and inclusive teaching, I developed a much more learning outcome-focused syllabus. I did not have the flexibility to move away from grades but I stopped testing and adopted a much more holistic assessment model.

@ZingerLearns @brndnpink @lewriley @ungrading @edutooters you are literally describing my process with my students in my own high school class. I only provide letter grades at the quarter and semester boundaries.

Any time a student asks me what their grade is, my first response is "what do you think your grade is?" and we have a conversation about their learning.

But I'm under constant pressure to have things in grade books.

I just realized I no longer miss Twitter at all. The varied expertise here is simply superior. This is what civilization is. A global conversation shared among real people. No bots, no rage. Just what's on your mind, and your mind is hugely varied. It's all wonderful wherever you are on the many islands of the Federation of Mastodonia

… Perhaps the best way to understand Mozilla is in the words of their president on their new VC arm:

“We see a lot of startups who want to tackle things like privacy, trustworthy AI, and alternatives to Twitter… alternatives are not going to emerge unless there’s founders and companies who build them. And the founders are not going to build them unless there’s money aligned with their vision … So I think we need to still be about commerce and creating wealth”
